    Fuck! I hate

organic chemistry with a passion not unlike that which I feel for skiing, but on the opposite. Just had to get that off my chest. (80 and sunny out, I should be on my bike today or lounging by the pool, but SOMEBODY decided that chemistry would be a good thing to take over the summer. Dumbass.)

Look on the bright side. At least you'll be able to tell when a molecule is chiral and when it's not. I know this skill has shaped my life in a big way.

right now I'd settle for for remembering the differences between families - ketones, aldehydes, esters - the basics. You're right though, sometime I'll be playing Trivial Pursuit - Enviro-geek edition and this will all be rewarded

13 years after O-chem and all I remember is cis vs trans.

It was fun to watch the Chemistry majors struggle with that class, while for us ChemEs it was easy.

I am amazed, but I find that an appreciation and general knowlege of o-chem has been one of the more valuable things I learned in school. It actually comes up a fair bit, and it's one of those things that non-ChemE's really have no idea of . . . so you can actually add some value and insight, which is fun, I suppose.

But, I gotta say, P-chem is where it's really at!

So do you have to take p-chem? I scored the lowest test score of my life in that class. A nine. That's right...a nine out of 100. And no, I wasn't stoned. The class average was 25 so I wasn't that crushed.

The upshot is: I dropped P-chem in a frenzy and changed my major to some liberal arts crap. But I never got over copping out on that. So later, after receiving my BA and embarking on a masters I began to concurrently finish the chem degree.

I did really well on the p-chem 2nd time around. Like something finally clicked in my head (really I think it was called "stop attending parties nonstop and instead spend lots of time working on p-chem problems in the library"). So anyway I got a 91% on the final and was the 2nd highest score in the class. I'm still really proud I pulled that off. And that I earned my chem degree, though I do not use it.

Edit: lol kellie...I was just posting and see that you too survived p-chem. Get this, I had to take PChem lab II while 6 months pregnant. My professor was none to happy and everytime they turned on the xray machine I had to leave the room for five min, which made it difficult.

At CU, and probably many other schools, they call it Satanic Organic for a reason. "OK, take all the rules from regular chem, toss them out the window and learn these new rules and all of the exceptions."

So you are taking O-Chem in the summer....but isn't it better than taking it during the WINTER? That was what got me through bar review this summer when all of my friends were off enjoying their lives. I love summer, but it would REALLY suck balls to miss out on winter.

Almost as bad as taking statistics during the summer. To top it off, the day of my final, my friend and I decided to climb Mt. Ellinor. We barely made it to the final, as we were across freaking Puget Sound and had to take a ferry back to UW.

I've got a chemistry minor, and had to take 3 semesters of organic. For me it was by far the easiest chemistry course I ever took. Thank god I was able to take biochemistry instead of physical chemistry.

Not to play my fiddle too loudly, but I am taking an independent study in stats/geostats as well as chem - on the plus side, it's just regular chemistry, with a little o-chem thrown in at the end for flavor. However, these are some of the classes I tried to avoid by pursuing a geography undergrad degree, now that I'm writing a thesis I actually have to know some of this wonderful material.

Headin' for the chem final right now - any vibes out there would be appreciated...

O-chem was hard but I must say p-chem separates the men from the boys. Man that was a hard f'n class. It basically sucked all the life out of my senior year.
