That's why I left Alaska. I lived that for six years.

True, but good ski conditions are always fleeting. Hence it's a tough activity for people prone to depression and mood swings. Hey, we all struggle with it to one degree or another. The best way I've found to deal with it is just keep skiing through the shit conditions. Better than stewing at home for me.

Anyway, this thread has been great this winter and you guys have had a better season than most of us out west. To all who posted stoke, thanks, it was appreciated.

This is me also. I just have to go ski and I feel better no matter what.

Came home yesterday and my daughter and stepson built a mini jump in the backyard and were having a park sesh since school was a snow day for the girl. Stepson never much liked skiing, or me, we had to drag him along everywhere. But this year he bought himself a season pass to Chestnut and has been going multiple times per week....and he keeps insisting he is going to Taos with us next week. Warms my jaded step-dad heart.

I always view Yetiman's posts from a more holistic perspective though so I am struggling a bit with the focus (defensiveness) regarding him thinking some of the stoke here is grift. Here and everywhere. Everywhere has its own crisis of dysfunction as well. He knows that. Seems to me it (his rant) is less a shootdown of the stoke here and more just a part of his existential crisis de jour observations, and fascinating at that.

    Edited last paragraph for clarity.

IAS’s problem is that he cares too damned much and he sets a high standard and he wants everybody to have as pure an experience as he does. He also has a ton of life experience and seems to get kicked in the nuts more than anybody has any right to be kicked in the nuts.

If anybody can have that perspective honestly and with humility and without pretense, it’s IAS.

I also get bummed when the end of winter shows itself.

Skiing always makes me happy even when it sucks

I got up north once, skied 2 days in Gaylord over New Years and that was my season.
Life didn’t allow for anything more for me this year. But we made the best of it. The wife, who started skiing at age 25 due to her husband forcing it on her, keeps getting better and keeps enjoying it more. She used to dread getting dragged up north to ski. Now she loves it! That was my win this season.

    And in my opinion,
‘Get that hobo a cliff bar, Caleb’
Was the winning sentence of yetis rant.

I go into a real kind of tense/despondent/panicked funk. My fiancé has been great with it…. It seems I start to really hit my groove with skiing about when the season is over. Maybe it’s a good thing the season is short.
    focus.

Funny, Jackson snow report a couple weeks ago said the opposite, something like "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad layering, go find a place to paint your signature on our mountain".

it was -5 on top with 20-30 mph winds and poor visibility. The weather sucked and so did the snow that day. Just say "Bundle up it's gonna be cold" and don't spin me the marketing B.S., some days just suck don't blame it on me.

    farmers. and ,,, Firefighters. 😬

    I spent a day a long time ago who worked at Baker for two seasons ;
Steve said, 'forget GoreTex. commercial fishing wear. '

I don't think I have ever thought of March as the middle of Winter...

    I empathize with i-as...
He is a deep-thinker, who sees layers to stuff that I have spent way too much time racing down the road to even consider

( to me, his humanity drove him from his life's Work . . . )

    ugly's perspective is thought provoking...

one of the things I love about Montana in March is I could ski in the mountains, and late in the afternoon in the valley, the snow was gone, it was FiftyF degrees, and I could Walk the dog(s) without worrying about falling on the ICE and breaking my arse.

    Thank you, Harry !

    it's weird-
' home hill' of my adolescence, I still feel an affinity for the place.

I reckon I need to just be grateful for the experiences and the memories...
riding the ropes, I made 200 runs one day in 1980...

I always wondered why you had one arm six inches longer than the other. I figured it was a birth defect but was too polite to ask about it. Now I know.

It is the stoke thread, says so right in the threat title. So here is some STOKE:

Got up this morning, changed my Mom’s diaper and gave her meds, then headed out the door to Christie Mountain. -5F on the drive there, not many cars in the lot. Warmed up to +11F by the time the lifts opened. Conditions were great. Super soft corduroy, I had a shitload of fun as usual.

Today will close out my Midwest season. I’m headed west tomorrow for BBI-MT in Big Sky, then dropping down to Jackson for a bit. My brother got into town and I will turning over care for my Mom to him during the several weeks I am gone.

This has been a great season. When I moved back to the Midwest I did not think I would be skiing this much. With Trollhaugen opening so early this season I will have broken over 100 days on skis this year.

When I get back from my trip west the skiing here in the Midwest will be over. That’s OK, it will be time for fishing stoke. Three of the best Musky rivers in the world are within 25 miles of me, and of course I have great bass and walleye fishing right out my front door. This place really is a sportsman’s paradise.

I am super stoked on Midwest life.

    2019/2020 Midwest Stoke Thread

Departed smalltown Northern Wisconsin and headed west on US Hwy 8 headed for BBI-MT in Big Sky. As I was going right by Trollhaugen, I stopped by and bought a season pass for next year. $279. FKNA.

Every person I saw there had a smile on their face. Looking forward to next season.

Had a few cold, windy days at Lutsen, naturally on a very inappropriate Midwest ski that skied the groomers pretty well for its width.

The inappropriate midwest ski turned into the perfect Midwest ski for a dozen runs this morning on some freshies. Got to lay first tracks down the cat track on Hari Kari as well.

These could have very well been my last runs of the year and no better way to end it.

just rebounded from Fake Spring here in NE MN. Got almost 3" new snow at the house. I was worried Giant's Ridge was on a short fuse but we got a brief pardon. Next few days are high 20's to low 30's.

Good to hear. I'm gonna need those island coordinates as soon as the plane goes on floats.

I also did something potentially dumb. Bought a 4mm wetsuit. I like paddleboarding and flyfishing off my board. Not sure how fast the water warms here though.

Chestnut just announced their intention to build lift access mountain bike trails. Construction starts now, phase 1/3 opens late summer.

Stoke meter is through the roof.
