    Screw the PVC.
Buy mntlions fork mount. bolt it to a 2x4. bolt 2x4 to your roof rack using U bolts and use hardware store web tie-downs to strap the rear tire to the end of the 2x4.
    Done.

What they said. I built a similar system, works great. Buy some straps, rope, or bungie cords just as a precaution in case your engineering isn't quite up to par. Wouldn't want a bike going through the windshield of the car behind would ya?

Actually PVC is perfect. It's a super solid, stiff platform to clamp your bike onto. I've tried other things like metal and wood, and they waaaay too noodly and sloppy for something like a bike tray.

I have some large cardboard boxes, some glue, and a few wood screws that I'll sell you. All you need to get is some saran wrap and a couple hinges.

Coat the cardboard w/ saran wrap (waterproofing), it's probably best to glue it on. Cut the boxes about 1/2 way up the long way and glue on the hinges. Then screw the whole thing to your roof.
