And let’s not forget wooden brake blocks.
Green pine was the grippiest, but they sure wore out quickly.

You had it good. We only had uphill, both ways.

You had wooden brakes? We had to brake with our feet.

Here's one: set up my tires tubeless, they inflated great and I've been using them for a number of rides, but my air pump doesn't really give me a reading anymore (it shows no pressure, and when I pump it goes up to 20 and then slowly back to nothing), so I can't tell what the PSI is. I just squeeze the tire with my hands. Is this common / do you just live with it and guess? I'm guessing this is because I removed the presta core and put sealant in through the valve...

eta: pump works fine on the road bike tires

Sounds like the gauge may not work well with low pressure? Does it work when your road tires are at 20psi? Get a low pressure dedicated gauge like this: https://www.modernbike.com/product-2...BoCTdAQAvD_BwE

Shouldn't have anything to do with the sealant unless you managed to get sealant in the gauge itself somehow. You could remove the valve core and clean it but that'll just make it easier to pump in air.

Sounds like maybe your valve is clogged with sealant. Pump is unsuccessfully trying to send air in. 20 psi is just the pressure in the hose.

Hopefully the valve has a removable core. Pull that out, clean it, reinstall and re-inflate.

    I'm about to kill someone.

DHR II DH casing tire + asymmetrical carbon rim + cush core.

I have about 5" of bead I can't get popped over. I know the whole "push the bead to the center rim groove" thing, but when the center rim groove is way on the far side of the center of the rim it's nearly impossible.

    I'm at a loss.

    Tons of soapy water, etc.

Sucks. Asym rim no likey CushCore and the dh tire doesn’t help. If you haven’t already, lay the tire in the sun for awhile. If not, you may need to step down to DD or exo+

Suns gone. Should have layed it out there an hour ago when it was 95 degrees.

How insane is very light use of a heat gun?

I bought these tires for way too much today at an LBS since the ones I ordered online got goat fucked by the USPS. Trying to ride tomorrow. Big race next weekend. Fuck.

Zip tie the part of the tire that’s on the far side. Keeps the beads centered in the “valley” of the rim.

Trick I learned for changing my moto tire. Skip to 8:20

Throw a tube in and ride it tomorrow and hope that stretches the tire out a smidge? Good luck, that sounds like a frustrating task.

Do the far bead first. 2nd bead should be on the side closer to center line.

Get one of these too: https://www.cushcore.com/product/bead-dropper/

Yes it's a $20 tire lever but it has a lifetime warranty and the angst it saves installing tires with inserts is priceless.

I tried that first and it pushed the cushcore over so far that it popped out of the groove and then I couldn't even get the "closer" side started.

I probably need to try that again though.

Hot tip: If your local recycling center does bike tires, go down there with your core remover and grab some Cores off of used tubes. You owe me Like, $1.87.

Or just go into a bike shop and ask for a couple. They'll probably have a bunch sitting around.

I remember using my dads oxy-acetylene torch back in the late 80’s to put a nice round ball on cable ends. Kind of like melting a nylon rope or shoelace so it doesn’t unravel. I haven’t had access to a torch since then, so that practice fell by the wayside for me. A used torch is on the want list though

Have the new XT on my current bike and really like how it shifts etc...
