Why wait for a Rivian? All the reviews say they're great except...and then they list a ton of shit that never happens to any other car anywhere. Like they become a brick. Yes, I'm exaggerating, but not by much. If you want a smallish electric SUV, there are already a bunch of them out there, and by legacy automakers. Ya know, the ones that have dealers, and repairs shops all over the place and shit. Seriously, are people just wackadoodle for new tech shit?

I agree, but at least there’s a chance.

CATL also has one now that'll add up to 370 miles in 10 minutes.

love that battery tech is moving right along. I wish there was more support for third party battery replacements on current gen vehicles. When if my battery is shit on my ioniq 5, it'd be nice to put a new one in third party one (with better battery tech at that point I hope) if the car is still otherwise in great shape.

I wouldn’t say it can’t happen, but it’s probably more complicated than most people envision.

Those battery assemblies are much more than just some cells wired together. They have cooling/heating systems running through them, structural and sealing components, etc.

Probably not the best analogy, but it may be closer to having a third party making a replacement engine than a third party making a replacement 12V battery.

In a lot of the older cars (Model S for example) the battery is made up of a series of individual modules with a form factor and design elements that are relatively straightforward. You can also salvage modules from other cars and cobble together a better pack than you had. The pack frame itself is what has the temp management system, etc. This approach requires rebalancing the cells and some other minor wizardry. There are a whole 2 shops on the west coast that offer battery repair/replacement in this model. So it's doable, but the cost they quote is not that much better than going through Tesla. If someone approached me with a full tray of new modules and a nominal labor cost to install them I think I would pay between 5-8k to keep the thing going for another 100k. Not much more than that because at that point the alternative of selling the thing and paying for a vehicle with fewer miles/better battery becomes the more economical option.

The other problem with replacing your own battery is that the thing weighs about 1500#, is bigger than your dining room table, and has somewhat fragile connections. It would in no way be a DIY job...

I’ve worked on production line projects in the Sparks Gigafactory. I’m aware of what goes into their assembly.

I think it’s one thing to refurbish a few batteries with salvaged parts (though I’d probably even have concerns with quality standards there), but entirely different if you’re trying to produce them at volume.

Edit: just to expand on this a bit - a 12V battery production line can handle a variety of battery sizes, they have that kind of flexibility built in, and the products don’t vary that much. Kind of like a factory making 8 packs and 12 packs of soda.

A EV battery line is not like that. The form factor varies widely from car to car, brand to brand, they all have proprietary components designed into them, etc.

It’s going to be a huge undertaking for a 3rd party to be able to produce those parts and assemblies in volume at a cost that will be competitive.

It’s kinda telling how little volume Redwood Materials does.

and on a separate note, the market for replacement battery packs might evolve differently now there’s volume entrants with different models

That range depends on the temperature and the road and the passengers weight..and wind..and the speed of the car......possibly its a perfect world number pulled out of a fortune cookie

I can only go 250 miles in my 2000 TJ before I have to recharge/fill the tank. Doesn't seem to be a problem. How many vehicles go 450 on a tank of gas?

My GMC 2500 can go 650. We used to have a bimmer that would go 700 at least. Granted both newer diesels. I'd say the Forester we had a few years back would go 700 on a tank as well. So, I would say a great number if vehicles get you +450 in a tank.

Learning every day. My old body won't do more than 4 hours/300 miles in a day so that's all I need. Carry on.

    Electric car thread

You guys seen the new Silverado? I’ll never own a pick up, but 440 real world miles, all the cool features the non-legacy companies are trying to do, etc.

yeah insane range. Also a 215 kWh pack.

Thing charges at 350 kw too which is nuts. Charges at 225 kw at 75% just insane speeds.

It'd be $22 to charge the full pack at home for me in Utah at 10 cents/kWh. Nuts it's that cheap for that range on a full size truck.

The truck that intrigues me is the ramcharger - I have to tow. But nothing beats my paid off truck now so not happening

That thing is hideous. GM always finds a way to ruin their products, you'd think they would have learned with the Avalanche, but no. It looks like a jacked up subaru brat.
