the use case is diverse but the sub 100 mile towing makes it hard for MY (me - not other people) use case. Maybe with dc fast charging (pull through!) with >350kw chargers every 25 miles all across the nation might change that...

right on my lil cabin is right across the winds from you in Bondurant and i leave from Ogden to visit almost every weekend in the summer. Just pulled it up it's 197 miles from lander > evanston. I bet you leave lander with 100% lol
It's not feasable in the winter at the moment due to lack of ability to charge once I show up as my last mile is a snowmachine to my place and the place where I park does not have any charging (level 1 or 2).
And honestly evanston > bondurant is pushing it come winter. A strong headwind would really leave me in a tough spot even if I had level 1 or 2 at my destination.
Yeah, the towing range is a bummer. Luckily for us we don't really need to tow. I do think the range is greater than 100 miles, but way less than 200. We need lots more chargers for sure!
Just learned about the Kia EV9 that is coming sometime in 2023. Depending on when that will be available I'm rethinking the Lightning. An EV SUV with fast charging sounds pretty awesome.
We’re at an interesting turning point in time; where cost of ownership is at a tipping point. I bet in a few years you are going to have to be allergic to money to buy a gasser as a grocery getter / local commuter.
….but then again… plenty of people are already allergic to money… commuting in full size trucks and SUVs….

It's wild how much they've become so lux over the years. I still find it absurd that people are spending the kind of money they are on pickup trucks. Then they've spent so much on their vehicles that they're afraid to ever get a scratch, a bit of mud, or ever tow with them. As somebody's who had to drive big trucks extensively for work (oilfield related), the LAST thing I'd want to do is choose to drive them for civilian duty. I don't care how much the manufacturers overboost the assisted steering, they still drive like ass. Definitely a compensation thing for many a suburban white collar man who wants to feel like a badass as he towers over traffic on his way to pick to pick up his single bag of mulch from Lowe's, if it ever even gets THAT much action.
That whole "big vehicle is safer" myth has been debunked so thoroughly by now that one has to be willfully ignorant to believe it. Those big, tall trucks/SUVs are less safe for their occupants and WAY less safe for other road users and especially cyclists and pedestrians.

ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.
Haha. Yup! And there ya have it. People think they have to be bigger than everyone else to be safe. I'll take nimble and spritely over an obese, lumbering vehicle every time. I've always felt more "secure" in sportier vehicles where crash AVOIDANCE is easier to achieve.
No…. That’s what makes it even more incomprehensible… You could spend your $70k on a nice new 5 series. But you decided a 7000# truck was a better idea for the Trader Joe’s parking lot.

While I wholly agree with you that it's incomprehensible for you and I to fathom, oldnew_guy is right in that the luxo-truck segment has supplanted (in people's minds at least) the need for a premium brand car. People think their Canyonero can be a Swiss Army Knife vehicle for them. But to ME, that'd be the same as using a Swiss Army Knife as a chef's knife. I'm more of a right tool for the job kinda guy. Use my small car for most family daily duty, take the wagon when bringing the dog to the park or hauling lumber, and for the rare times I actually need a truck, I run to U-Haul/Lowe's/HD and rent one for $20/hour. Not that hard and I'm not stuck driving a big ass pickup truck the other 99.999% of the time of year.
Driver stereotypes aside, you're actually getting something for your 70k luxury sport sedan. The F series has generated massive profits year over year with very little ongoing investment. It's Ford's money printer.
