    That's interesting. I had a BJJ instructor tell us that anyone over 50 shouldn't wait until you feel like you're starting to lose consciousness to tap when practicing the rear naked choke, it's not good for your brain. But apparently ok if you're 49 or younger, choke away!

    Just a reminder to start / continue lifting heavy weights as you age. There are numerous studies and tons of anecdotes about people in their 70’s and 80’s who have the bone density of 30 year olds thanks to strength training. Running, swimming, hiking, ski touring IS NOT STRENGTH TRAINING. To get the best benefits you need to be lifting heavy (of course you don’t do this on day 1 or even 90, build up slowly through progressive overload until you are lifting 1-2 x body weight).

    I agree with this 100%. In a completely different vein, getting back into lifting helped me rehab a chronic injury I had been dealing with for 5+ years. This was 7 years ago and if I slack off on weights, I notice it in my injured leg.

    If you don't have a background lifting weights I'd recommend trying to find some type of professional that will help you learn the basics. I don't live in a big city and I can think of 3 different places off the top of my head that will teach you the basics of squats, deadlifts, bench press, etc. (for a fee of course)

    48.. just got back into rowing. Usually go out and hammer in my single for 50 minutes. Did a couple races in the fall. A great time. Wake up back sore from tight hamstrings.

    Took blood pressure with FL machine when here the other day 125/75. 38 bpm on the ticker. Same as when I was 20 rowing 2.5 hours a day. Need to melt of 15 lbs of me…. I like the dumbbell analogy Cary that 15 lb weight around 24/7. I like beer and wine, F me! Bought an C2 erg this fall. Torture device. Trying to whittle down my 30 minute average. Netflix is my friend. That erg is a torture device.

    I am a fish out of water, couldn’t run to save my life. But I determined to become a runner. After straining my knee my doc told me I had no lateral hip/leg strength.

    You have to work your weaknesses when you age. I hit the lower body like never before now. And I can feel the difference as my running improves.

    Good rule for all subs. I heard (and believe) each time you close off all the blood vessels it makes them a tiny little bit weaker and easier to close off next time. for triangles and collars and darce etc. You shouldn't ever need the room to go dark to know if they've got it.

    My elbows shoulders knees ankles etc don't need any help feeling creaky. If we're just drilling or even post class rolls, once I know someone's got a sub locked I'll tap. Tournaments are different, but yeah, preserve the grape and all the joints. tap sooner.

    Clean living for me. Keep the boozing moderated, good balanced diet with, for me, lots of salmon protein.

    Along with more quality sleep than I used to provide myself.

    I’ve noticed my pain tolerance is much higher than years past. Pain reminds me I am still alive and getting after it I suppose. So it doesn’t ‘hurt’ as much. But mostly I just don’t send it like I used to, so fewer fucked landings, hits and such.

    Yeah strechting helps a lot, especially in climbing. Win win for me.

    What I noticed it takes forever to build max strength when I train on the campus Board or beast maker. While the young ones get bigger muscles by the minutes it seems.

    Large foam roller FTW. I've always been fairly tight, and had shoulder and calf issues due to that, but started rolling the shit out of calves / hamstrings / lats / pecs and it's helped a to at 47 w these joint issues.

    Oh, interesting. I always thought scabbing was part of the healing process.
