Ha! I often ride dirt in old “white” ski socks usually as a poison oak barrier. They’re close to tan in color these days![]()
Has anyone got their hands on a Coros Dura GPS head unit yet?

Selling my 53cm Niner RLT9RDO if anyone in Colorado is interested. Great f'ing bike but I've been too sick to ride this past year and now work obligations are taking precedence for the foreseeable future. HMU if interested. Frame packs and pedals not included as those will go on a future build.

Is it possible to ride from san Francisco to San Diego following dirt/gravel for a majority?
Looking at late Oct - Nov bikepacking ideas…. Or alternatively does anyone know of any loops around California, Utah, Colorado that would be warm enough for a few weeks? Somewhere around 500-600 miles would be about what I’m looking for
Thanks!
Hope the surgery goes better than expected.
I don’t have an exact answer to the CA tour idea, but with it being the shoulder season, desert areas, long valley, Owens valley would sound appealing to me. Please report back what you do.
Not sure you could do full SF to SD on dirt, but definitely a large part of it. The Tour de los Padres one year started at Arroyo Seco campground near King City and ended in Santa Barbara. It's a great route that took me about 6 days. I've seen people get to the start from the coast via Carmel Valley Road (paved). There is a fair bit of pavement to connect various parts of Los Padres forest as well. But it splits the route up nicely. To get to SD, bail off the TDLP route at Hwy 33/166 (end of Elkhorn Rd) and head east to Frazier Park then across the Angeles and San bernardino NFs, cross I-10 and south to Idyllwild, then follow the Stagecoach 400 route to San Diego. Most of this is on dirt. This is basically part of the Orogenesis bikepacking route we've been scouting. Parts of ANF and SBNF are closed right now due to the Bridge and Line fires which would complicate things. The whole thing might take a 2-3 weeks depending on speed and how big of days you're putting in. Weather will start getting kinda chilly up high. I can provide GPX tracks if interested.
Another route that should come into a good weather window soon is one I put together in the Mojave Desert that makes a loop with the Bradshaw Trail, Arizona Peace Trail, Mojave Road and Joshua Tree NP that I'm calling Desert Solitaire. It's 660 miles. I've found bypasses for the most heinous sand sections although there still is some left. Probably want 2.4 to 3.0 tires. It's still looking pretty hot on the route but should cool down a bit by end of the month. Early Nov should be primo. The route gets up to 5,600ft or so near Big Bear and across the Mojave preserve so those parts can get pretty cold by mid or late Nov. No one has ridden this yet since I just released it this summer. I'm trying to finagle 10 days away to make it happen myself.

Lots of other routes in the states mentioned but temps will be starting to chill anywhere with elevation. Bikepacking.com has a bunch for Utah deserts. This one near Vegas looks cool but just 2-3 days: https://www.instagram.com/gold.to.grand/
Another route I've started scouting uses Desert Natl Wildlife Refuge and then loops up to Caliente. Only a small part has been scouted but you're welcome to try it: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42282302
Arizona has some great routes like Queen's Ransom, AZT, and Fool's loop that could easily occupy a couple weeks.
Sweet post!!^^
I've had my eye on a SC Stigmata frame but saw that Revel Rover frames are at a deep discount. The Rover checks all the boxes for me but frames are over $1k off. Seems too good to be true.
With bike companies dropping like flies, I wonder how long Revel still going to be around. Any have any time on this frame or know how Revel is doing?
Good luck on the surgery! "we can rebuild him..." That pic looks very Blair Witch
Thanks evdog for the route suggestions!
Couple of things steering me in a bit more of a
Traditional way are that I’ll be solo, and am on a gravel bike with 45c tires.
So with that, I’m flying into San Francisco and planning to ride to San Diego (and fly out
of SAN) over about 3 weeks. Planning on the Carmel valley - Greenfield - King City - Jolon Road route to detour around the hwy 1 closure but since i have time and have never been there, strongly thinking about riding an out and back to Big Sur from the north.
Also looking at getting over to Catalina Island for a couple of nights.
Despite the amount of pavement I think it’ll be a good little adventure and will get me pedalling during what is normally a shitty shoulder season in the Canadian Rockies.
Soooo not really gravel bikepacking but sort of/kinda/close enough??

You could actually cut back to Hwy 1 from Greenfield by taking the start of the Tour de los Padres route over the Arroyo Seco - Indians Road. This drops you into Fort Hunter Liggett where you climb up Ferguson Nacimiento Road to the South Coast Ridge Rd. Then drop down the Los Burros Rd to Hwy 1 at Gordo. All of these roads are in good shape for gravel bikes. You're stuck on pavement from Gordo to Cambria where you start to get options if you want to go inland. Nice thing about the coast is there are plenty of campgrounds with hiker/biker sites that are cheap and always available.
Riding to the road closure at Big Sur from either the north or the south is worthwhile right now since there is much less traffic on the highway due to the closure. Catalina would be awesome too, just requires a bit more planning as you have to book campsites and ferries ahead of time.
X2 for Catalina, evdog and my TR(looks like I need to edit my photo links):

Thanks 406! Catalina definitely on the list, because, well, why not?!
I think most of those roads through Los Padres are closed from last years storms - this is the best status list I can find. Bummer but I understand that damage sucks and resources are needed elsewhere.
That being said, anyone have beta on the Carmel valley road to Greenfield over to King City and then down the Jolon road towards Morro bay?
Recognize there is an Amtrak from salinas to San Luis Obispo which might make a lot of sense too.
Thanks all!
PS- anyone here in the San Diego area that could help procure a bike box for travel back to Canada land after this trip? I’ll be there Nov 15 flying out on the 16th.
Thanks!

I’ve seen only negative reviews on the Coros. It appears that Wahoo is about to drop a new head-unit. Touch screen and all sorts of whatnots. I’m a big fan of the ease of use with Wahoo units.
crab in my shoe mouth
First I've heard of the Coros, but battery life looks killer and would be great for longer bikepacking trips with one less thing to keep track of charging. The main complaint seems to be the auto navigation, which I'd never use anyways.
What did the negative reviews point to? I like my Wahoo well enough but essentially unlimited battery life is intriguing.Originally Posted by buttahflake;[emoji[emoji6[emoji640
I've got a new Revel Rover frame coming and need to sell my old-ish Seven Mudhoney frame. No clue what this thing is worth now the bike biz is shrinking. It's from 2016, titanium, USA made, I'm the second owner and its in good shape. I'm thinking $700 for the frame, Enve fork and King headset (?)
Just want to move this thing quickly if any local mags are interested.

Just frame, fork and headset.
I'm honestly not sure of the size without measuring it. A buddy of mine had it custom made for him and he sold it me after just a few months of use. He's about my size - 6 ft tall, 32 inch inseam. I'll have to measure it when I get home later.
It always felt a bit small on me but still comfortable. I'm a long time mountain biker and this was my first drop bar bike so I'm no expert on how it should fit.
Started my California bikepacking journey today. Flew into San Francisco, built up bike in the airport and rode outta there to the REI
Downtown SF for stove fuel and enjoyed a pint (or two) of lagunitas IPA (tough to find this back home and I’ve discovered I like it from previous trips)
Couple wrong turns but urban cycling in SF was surprisingly straightforward.
Tomorrow I’ll do a loop around the N end of the city and take in the bridge (can’t believe I’ve been here 8-9 times and havent cycled across
it… with Half Moon Bay hike/bike campsite the destination tomorrow
