Well, slightly disappointed that I wasn't the pic of the day, but ADP and his roommate Dave were. I promise I was there - pics will be posted once ADP puts them on biglines.
Started hiking at about 10:30 AM. This is much earlier than yesterday's 5 PM start. Nice ho-hum walk up the road to base of Ballroom. Walked through the construction of the new lodge, which is where the Germ chair used to start. Watson's is no more.
Put the boots on and made our way up Main Chute. Not a bad bootpack, although we each had some slips. There's easily 3 to 4 feet of snow still in the chute, although it's only a ski width in a few spots. The snow stops less than 10 feet from the top of the chute, so we headed up to the summit to look around. (and look at Timp) Saw a few hikers up there wondering why we had ski boots on. DUH! We were going to ski!
The skiing was REALLY GOOD! Very smooth, soft enough but not soupy. I think the constant skiing of Main has kept it "groomed". Not too rocky - no major damage, although you have to be careful. The skiing was definitely worth the hike, although I may cheat next week and take the Tram. I have to get an August day in, and Main Chute is skiing really well.
Did I mention the weather was perfect again? Not too hot, clear blue sky, clean mountain air? Did I mention that today was Wednesday, July 27th, and I spent it skiing Main Chute? That did not suck.![]()
