    Is there a way...(ipod related)

To get music off one ipod and load it on another without using the computer the music was originally downloaded to?

Can I somehow upload the contents of an ipod to my computer and then download it to my new ipod?

(A friend gave me his old ipod with a ton of tunes on it, now i have a new ipod and would like to keep the tunes)

    Thanks.

for one, without your iPod docked in any way, go to your iTunes Preferences, look for the iPod area, and turn off the auto update feature - with that on, the iPod will delete or add files as necessary to mirror the iTunes directory.

with that off, I guess dock the iPod, and see if you can't click-and-drag the songs from the iPod's menu over into your "Library" in iTunes. It might work, it might not, I've never tried.

I just had to go turn in my iPod for warranty - my 40GB model got an auto update of the internet that required being plugged into the wall AC adapter for the voltage necessary to complete the update. The problem was, my iPod had never accepted power from FireWire cables before, and the AC adapters that came with the iPod until recently were FireWire ONLY in the connection to the iPod. I even borrowed somebody else's to see if it was a problem with any of my setup, but nope, it was the iPod itself. I had no problem getting power from the USB dock from the computer...and I could have bought the new USB-equipped AC adapter...but why pay 30 bucks to keep a product that's already defective, if it's still under warranty?

Anyway I drove the 200-some miles to the nearest Best Buy and ended up with a 60GB iPod Photo, as they don't make my 40-gigger anymore, for FREE. So I can't complain too much...

When you plug in a foreign ipod, you should be prompted if you want that to be the new linked or associated ipod.
    Say no.

then it appears on your itunes screen.
then you select the foreign ipod and "add tunes to library"
this will work as long as they aren't tunes that are copy restricted because they were purchased on line.

biggins - thanks for that link, my old computer had the program and I didn't remember how I ripped my iPod library, before.

Thanks for the info, peoples. Unfortunately a lot of the songs on the old ipod were puchased online, so I guess there's no way to copy them (or at least no way that I am technically competent enough to accomplish!).

Jumper, wow, 200 miles to a Best Buy? Where the heck are you?

    Pod Util

Not perfect but I used it to transfer 24Gigs of music from my IPod to a new computer. Easier then spending the two weeks I spent copying 400+ cds onto the old computers hardrive.

Looks like there are some hackers to help you
Google QTFairUse or "itunes DRM hack"

    QTFairUse
Posted by John in Editorials on 28 Nov 2003
Last Friday, Jon Johansen (of DeCSS fame) released QTFairUse, an open-source program for Windows that circumvents the FairPlay DRM scheme used by the iTunes Music Store.

QTFairUse doesn't actually break the FairPlay scheme. Instead, it circumvents it by patching QuickTime to dump the unprotected audio stream from memory to disk.
It's already possible to circumvent the FairPlay scheme; all you have to do is burn the protected audio tracks to an audio CD, then rip those tracks back into iTunes. Of course, this is a bit labour-intensive, and you'll lose some audio quality in the process.
With QTFairUse, you get a perfect, unprotected, digital copy of the protected audio; unfortunately, you don't get any of the other metadata that's found in the original file. This means that the audio is unplayable in most media players, although it is possible to massage the data so that it's playable.

So, right now, if you really want to have a DRM-free version of music you purchased from the iTMS, you're probably better off doing the burn-rip jig. QTFairUse isn't mature enough to make making DRM-free versions of music easy and straightforward.

What happens, though, if QTFairUse (or a similar program) does mature? What happens if it becomes incredibly easy to make perfect, unprotected digital copies of protected music. How much of an impact will QTFairUse have on Apple and the iTunes Music Store?

    Not much, I'd imagine.

Most (if not all) of the iTunes Music Store inventory is available on the various peer-to-peer networks; the people using the iTunes music store already have ways to get their music without paying for it, and yet they don't. Why?

The iTunes Music Store offers convenience (it's easy to find music), quality (the music is high quality), and good karma (the music is legal). People aren't going to give those benefits up. QTFairUse will enable them to play their music on computers that don't have iTunes (say, Linux machines), or allow them to share music with their friends. QTFairUse will even let them upload music to peer-to-peer networks (although the people that end up downloading that music probably wouldn't consider shopping at the iTunes Music Store anyway).

Of course, Apple could patch QuickTime, thus disabling QTFairUse and rendering the whole question moot, but right now I don't think it's a big enough issue for Apple to worry about, nor do I think it'll ever become one.

Back in lovely fucking Altus, Oklahoma (hence the 'Dumfukistan' loc.)...I'm here for 4 months this time

It's cool and all, I mean it's a good spot to learn my job without too many distractions, but the nearest Best Buy is in Wichita Falls, Texas. Otherwise I'd have to go all the way to Oklahoma City. The only thing this town has is a Wal-Mart Supercenter, that's it.

I actually had to go to Best Buy anyway since my parents had gotten it on the extended BB warranty. I could have warrantied it with Apple, too, but I'd have to mail it in and wait for them to fix it, versus walking into a BB and getting a brand-new, trouble-free one on the spot while they fix and refurb the broke one.

I can't believe they don't even have one (a best buy) in Lawton - home of Fort Sill. Army forts tend to drive up the local population both from their sizeable garrisons, and all the dependents and businesses that follow them...but I guess it's not enough for Best Buy. Ah well.

Ice, if you have a Mac, try this http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14182

Great collection of stuff there. Don't give up on unlocking I Tunes store tracks. I've heard that there is a utility out there that enables that, but is frowned upon by Mr Jobs and his lawyers.

I read somewhere on the web that if you rip stuff off itunes to a cd, you can upload that cd wherever you want, it supposedly kills the copy protect. Haven't tried it yet but I will soon.

I hate to love my iPod. I was cleaning my touch wheel deal and the thing fucking lost the list that tells the os what songs I have and where they are on the hard drive. Nothing but a blank music menu.

Have you tried re-booting the ipod OS?
Its on the apple site, or on the interweb.
You hold a couple buttons (play and menu?) for ten secs.

iPod reboot - hold slider to "on", then back to "off", and hold down "Menu" and "Select" buttons for 10 secs. Specifically, hold it down until you see the Apple logo in the window.

And yes, since you do own the music from the iTunes Store, you are free to burn it to disc as much as you'd like. Then that can easily be transferred back. In fact, they recommend doing this (for backing up the music somewhere else - it'd suck to lose a hard drive, and all that music you paid for...).

That's what I had to do to get it to unfreeze, then I did it another time to see if it would maybe bring my shit back. No luck, I just had to wait till I got home and reupload my shit. It just better not do this to me when I am on a vacation when I am away from my computer.

I used a util called "Copypod" to "borrow" the music on Telepath's ipod. Google for that - it worked a treat although the free demo only lets you copy a limited number of songs at a time.
