Well, you didn't die in this Episode. We knew that, but damn that was close. This Expedition style big mountain skiing is something else entirely.
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

But, having enough myoglobin in your bloodstream to piss coke-colored urine for a few days can cause at least some degree of permanent glomerular damage and long-term kidney function impairment, right?

Emphasis mine. Given the circumstances there's a high probability that he was dehydrated at the time. He got back on the bike after the heatstroke hit, while still in Death Valley.

I seem to recall that you're a doctor of some sort so presumably you know more about this subject than me, but personally, if I had dark-colored piss for multiple days after a bout of heatstroke in the middle of a century ride I'd want to get my serum creatinine and eGFR checked out. They're simple inexpensive tests, I don't see a compelling reason not to do it.

They didn't measure serum myoglobin, though. In the paper I linked to before high serum myoglobin (>8,000 ng/L) was significantly associated with long-term reductions in eGFR 3 months out. Per this source (https://www.uptodate.com/contents/cl...myolysis/print) myoglobin becomes visible in urine when the plasma concentration exceeds 1.5 mg/dL, which is equivalent to 15,000,000 ng/L. Last I checked 15,000,000 is a lot more than 8,000.

Scariest episode yet. So much bigger than any of the other lines we’ve seen - they didn’t even see the top part of the mountain and it still warrants a special feature. It was wild to see that moment of regret (knowing that everyone would be ok at the end). On the bright side, we can look forward to another Mount St. Elias episode at some point in the future. And University is still out there too…

Thank you for making that type of, not making it to the top episode a full half hour feature. That makes it more special.

"The Fifty" is really the only thing I search and watch on the YT app, yet none of the Fifty vids ever show up on my home page or suggested watch list. The irony is that the only video-based product placement advertising that worked on me was Cody drinking Strainge Beast. Instead I get suggestions such as "smart man traps alot fish" or "simple hydrogen generator with washers".

What happened to those base camp tents? Looks like you were in different tents on the beach.

I was wondering that as well. Could they have stashed them for a later attempt?

Glad to see I'm not alone here.

Either way, those avalanches were absolutely terrifying. I'm sure we've all found ourselves in situations where we questioned how we ended up there, but holy hell does this bring it to another level.

I have to say, beach scenes had me chuckling. There's nothing worse than being stuck somewhere camping when it's pissing rain and there's NOTHING to do.

Agreed. Thought this episode was fantastic.

It's so obvious that mountain is on a different scale than anything that came before, so fucking cool.

    The FIFTY

Episode was awesome. Made me want to try Moran again after turning around a few years back 2/3 of the way up. Keep it up Cody and Bjorn!

this was my favorite episode, but left me disappointed. Only because there were a couple veiled references to the next attempt which I thought was gonna happen during the episode

On the left there is a subscription tab which will show you what you are subbed to. You will see a dot if there is something new. You can also click the bell icon to be notified of a new posting.

Above your subs on the left is also a subscription link, which will show you items from that day from your subs.

I can take a screenshot if you can't figure it out.

    Amazing episode.
Nick mentioned being on the verge of a panic attack before setting off, which made me wonder how do you all settle the nerves when going to embark on such difficult adventures?

    Great episode.

One thing I didn't quite track: was the trek to the beach necessary for the plane pickup, or was it an extra credit adventure? Looked like base camp was at the dropoff point.

Yeah, my buddy Jon was stuck up there in a storm where everyone was digging out the snow cave 24/7 so they weren't buried alive. When the plane showed up in a brief window, they left all their shit- thousands of dollars of ski/climbing/camera gear. But they lived.

Yesterday in the liftline I got a full Cody call-out. Dude says "I really love your Fifty series, it's great stuff man." I should have messed with him more but I was too surprised to do anything other than mumble, "that's not me."

I assume the plan was to ski to the beach from the start since it looked like there were a few open weather windows for a glacier pick up. It seems Cody doesn't do things the conventional way. Why park at Whitney Portal if you can bike from Badwater? Just to mention one unnecessary sufferfest, but these extras make the whole series so much better.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

To generally answer a lot of the questions...

    1. The goal from the beginning is to ski from the summit to the sea, potentially the longest ski run in the world. So instead of leaving the mountain with nothing, we decided to ski the bottom half and learn more about it since there has only been two groups ever that have skied the lower half of that mountain...and boy did we get a lesson.

    2. I don't know how we settle nerves, I was the most nervous I've ever been departing on to the mountain as well.

    3. Well yeah, next attempt isn't gonna be the same week. We're gonna try again this spring.

    4. Man, I've never had so many people talk about my pee. Don't worry though, I'm all good.

The wife must’ve lit into you like nobody has ever seen, glad that you’re still here.

The series is something I look forward to and it’s going to be sorely missed once you accomplish this mission successfully.
How do you top this? Looking forward to finding out.

My mom is going through a hell of time with her kidneys and it’s really hard for me to see. Please get checked out at bare minimum. But you already know this.
