Are you staying in the downtown, or in the 'burbs?

Hehe, I was going to suggest Monks too, was there 1.5 weeks ago visiting my sister. Noddinghead Brewpub is also a good one. I still need to hit Eulogy too. Those are in Center City.

Monks is less than a block from my apartment, so I put in some quality time there. And it is quality. You know the Monks people own Nodding Head, and ex-Monks people own Eugoogly, right? Not as huge a fan of that place. The Monks crew also opened a place over the winter up around 23rd and South called Grace Tavern, very solid neighborhood bar.

In any event, I'm down for whatevah. Could also host a little BBQ if weather permits, assuming we're getting together in CC.

The conference is at St. Joe's University. So, I'll be staying somewhere near there. Is that close?

SJU is in Philadelphia, but its a couple miles out of Center City. I don't really know what's around Hawk Hill in terms of bars, restaurants, etc., because I am a relative Philly JONG. I do know that it's a very short train ride into the city, though, so it would be easy enough for you to come in or for people to go out there. If you haven't been to Philly before it's definitely worth a trip in for a night on the town.

St. Josephs Univ is in the eastern edge of the city, on what used to be called City Line Avenue, go across the street and you're in the suburbs, map. I live a few miles from there, on the 'burbs side. It's in a busy business retail corridor, a few hotels and restaurants, mostly national-chain brands. For local bars, and more interesting crowds, you have to go into the city, east to the downtown (Monk's, and lots more), or a mile north across the river to Manayunk (Flat Rock Saloon, etc.), south of downtown to the South Street district (kinda cheesy but still entertaining). On the weekends Old City is has a lot of nightlife. Reply back if you want more names.

St. Joes girls are good-looking, but preppy. Too bad you're there in the summer.

Count me in. I need to get out more often. Eulogy is great- hundreds of beers to choose from.

Just as long as there is some sort of transpo near SJU I am willing to travel.

Monk's sounds like my type of place. Let's shoot for Monk's on either Friday or Saturday night. Stephen, Plake, and No User, send me your cell numbers so we can get this set up. How far is the train from campus?

    No User,

Yeah, I'm used to being around rich/preppy catholic girls for most of my days at work. I work on a campus here in Denver filled with the same clientele . Thank god (no pun intended) I'm happily married, or else I would get myself into a shitload of trouble. So, you PA boys gonna sack up and get out for a night?

ISKIBC - at St Joe's you are right around the corner from one of the most amazing museums in this country. If you like impressionist art go to the Barnes Foundation; you will be blown away. You'll need a reservation. Google 'em.

If you're not into the art then skip it but definitely go to the city on the maggot party tour. I'm still partial to Jim's for cheesesteaks but that's like a religious issue in Philly so you'll get many different opinions there.

Philly has a good chinatown too - Ocean Harbor for dim sum. A couple of blocks away is the liberty bell.

Fun town - have a good time.

Edit for PS - get a car. Fuck public transportation in Philly.

    DJMingus,

I will definitely check out the museum. Sounds interesting. Thanks for the beta for food spots. So, the public transpo sucks there? Damn, my boss won't let me rent a car, and I'm not gonna fork out money from my own pocket, so it looks like I'm stuck. Oh well. I'll figure a way to get downtown.

So who's in for Friday night or Saturday night?

Saturday is better for me- I work until 8 on Friday and have to work Sat too. But I CAN do Friday if properly motivated.

Museum = http://www.barnesfoundation.org/, it's definately quirky to get into, but will worth it.

Philly public transportation is not that bad, IMO. Buses literally clog City Avenue, (Rt 1), in both directions during the day and early evening. A short distance away, (I'll guess .5 mile) is a commuter rail station into the center city (the R5 line), buses stop there, and there are always cabs there, too (map). There might even be a local shuttle to St. Joes, check with them. There are also two more rail stations along city avenue, but much lesser used (R100, and R6).

But, two things to keep in mind: The trains and buses stop running at ~12 midnight. The trains, (main roads, too), are designed as a spoke-and-hub system for weekday commuters, with the hub being center city. You can easily get into center city and back again by train, but not in the other outlying areas of the city. Buses are setup to make circular paths, generally towards the city center and back again. City Avenue in that area is a busy zone, lots of retail, office employment and colleges, so lots of buses funnel through.

If you're staying out late, you can't use the buses/trains. For where you are staying, to go downtown, train in/cab back is the best bet.

I'm likely going to be out of town on Sat. nite. Friday is a better possibility, will keep watching here for more info.

Ahh, don't listen to me - I don't know how public trans in Philly compares to other places. I'm just not into dealing with all sorts of scum and crackheads. I'd for sure stay out of the subways any time but rush hour, but I'd do that anywhere in the US.

Have a good time and don't miss the Barnes.

It's looking like I'm going to be out of town both Fri and Sat nite for a MTB race, near State College, Wilderness 101. It's still somewhat tentative, will post back here if I don't go.

So is this thing on- or is it going to end up like 90% of all East Coast maggot events?
