    Elliptical chainrings at the TDF

Was checking out the tech info on Cyclingnews and this was interesting. Apparently some riders (including Bobby Julich) are using elliptical chainrings that alter how power is transferred through the pedal stroke which allows riders to increase the consistency of the power through the stroke. Seems interesting. heres the link go to the bottom to see the rings.

Didn't Shimano ditch BioPace for a reason?
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

If you didn't know this guy, would you trust him:

Let's face it, geniuses are quirky mutherfuckers (In no way am I necessarily declaring Sheldon Brown a genius).

The eliptical chainring idea is good in theory. If you're the type of rider that it works for, you use it. I doubt Julich is riding these things for the first time at the tour...so it obviously works for him.

I found if the power was on at all times they worked but if I was cruising holding a steady pace without working really hard I tended to bob lots and had a jerky rotation. For a long time I had round on the top and biopace on the lower 2 but eventually I went back to round.

Bobby J rode the eliptical chainring to a bronze medal in the Olympic TT last year.

Many years ago I got 3rd place in the 14-15year old ITT in the Ohio State Games on my Nishiki Olympic tricked out with BioPace chainrings, they work!
