Engleberg from Lucerne as a day of skiing was really easy by train

Buster, does this plan seem reasonable:

Arrive ZUR at 0830 on Tue and take train to Engleberg via Lucerne. Check in and hopefully get a half day on the slopes. Ski Eberg Wednesday and catch late afternoon train to Rueras via Lucerne/Göschenen (I think?), get in to Rueras late. BBI through Saturday then back to Zurich Sat night.

Alternately, would it make sense to stop in Lucerne and use it a a lodging base to/from Engleberg on Tues/Weds? Or too much PITA?

I love Andermatt and the surrounding touring, and want to ski there again, but haven't skied Disentis yet, so will want to explore with guides/mags.

2funky, it looks like ZUR-Rueras is a bit over 3 hours via Göschenen by train.

PS, I don't mind sharing a room with anyone and don't snore.
For just a 1 nighter, I'd stay in Luzern (much less expensive): change into ski stuff, leave debris in a Luzern or E-berg bahnhof locker in the morning, train to E-berg, ski, train back to Luzern, sleep, train back to E-berg, ski, train back to Luzern, grab stuff, roll to Rueras.

If you can find inexpensive lodging in E-berg, it might be cheaper just to sleep there rather than blow trainfare?

Or, on landing, just temporize in Luzern, eat, drink, museum, walk around, sleep, ditch debris @ bahnhoff, ski, pick up stuff on way to Rueras?

Thanks for the beta Buster. Will look in to lodging options near Luzern Bahnhof as well as the places you mentioned in EBerg. Also, it may depend on when youse guyz are planning the various group skis/tours and such, since if I spend a coupla days in Eberg, I won't actually be BBI-ing 'til Thursday at the earliest.

The H+ was the best deal close to the E-berg bahnhof I found.

There's a bunch of less expensive places in Luzern, across the footbridge up in the old town even.

Parsimony drives many of my choices on these peripatetics.

I'll arrive in Rueras the evening of the 17th and I have to be in ZRH the night of the 22nd ( I think that's Friday night?)

Come rail around the SkiArena during the week, then we can schwing to Engelberg.

Are you committed to the order?

Yeah, Mofro and I are synced. Still time to change minds and weather, but the current vision is to depart SkiArena on the 22nd, ski Englelberg 23/24, fly out the 25th.

I would consider to ski E-Berg not on the week-ends. Much less crowded. I guess the effect is smaller in SkiArena as only Andermatt is a week-end / day-trip plan for the Zurich crowd but not Sedrun or Disentis ( I know they are connected but still I feel this way)

it's the only place that i have been fully buried. fortunately it was champagne powder sluff and i popped right up after a few choking moments. yes, it's an awesome run but checkity check yourself and the conditions. it's hard to resist when you see all the scandi lines everywhere. does eberg still have a bad case of the scandis?

@Buster - it would be good to include a summary in the first post (or somewhere fixed) with each attendee and the dates for the trip. at the moment i'm booked for vendul's place 20-24 but i could easily adjust if others want to ski eberg. i could easily take the whole week off, 16-24, doing eberg before and/or after. plus i have a car so if there is room i could transport some people from eberg to vendul's or vice versa.

In my opinion, very humble opinion... I know Engelberg is very popular across north America and Scandinavia (It's probably the closest ski area to zurich) but Skiarena Andermatt-Sedrun and Engelberg are pretty similar, each has its pros and cons but I could say that both share the same kind of terrain: one single big mountain big snowfall average and a groomers paradise on the other side...( that's were you have to be after a dump, you can ski powder with no stress) so if you ski one there's not really the point to ski the other.
After the ski arena I would head off to a completely different kind of resort. Either a big famous and glamour and so on (which probably have the best skiing in the Alps) like Zermatt, Engadin, Arosa, Verbier and so on... or head to tiny or less known super fun mountains, like: Minschauns, Bivio, Arolla, Obersaxen... Saas Fee i'm not saying Engelberg isn't good, I'm just say consider also other options to see something completely different from here. (than if you have friends or special reasons to visit that's a different thing)

The big difference is that Skiarena now has a very new lift system ( not Gemstock ), by train there's a difference of only 15 minutes between going to Andermatt and Disentis ( Disentis is through Chur) from Zurich. By car is different.

@vendul: agreed on both posts - especially the first one considering Engelberg vs. Zermatt-category or Bivio-category.

Being from Zurich: Never did we consider to go to dissents for a day. Andermatt: yes, Engelberg: even more. I don't know why.
But I feel that Engelberg on a good Saturday / Sunday tracks out fast as hell and I would rather go to Skiarena for the Week-End if I have the choice. The new lifts will also take some time to settle in the conservative Swiss minds ;-)

I'll add a link to a public poll for the specific days each k00k is planning to show. You may have to fill out your own dance card.

    Re: Engleberg

It is about the easiest place I have been to in the Alps. The about of terrain directly in front of your face is amazing. I could definitely suggest it as a "entry to Euroski" location. As mentioned, it can be busy. If you are feeling it and the conditions are appropriate, it is a great place to put the skins on a do some shorter tours. Scandos tend to be freeride focused. What is the name of the big hotel in the main square with the apres bar with the patio underneath it? That used to be the go to budget place.

Weed: Don't expect the cronic, don't expect shake down street. Back alleys late night is where it goes down. For daytime use, look for the Frenchies with the hash rollies.

Travel: Swiss train travel is the easiest public transportation system I have ever used. CH is a bit pricey but shit just works. Don't worry about logistics.

This is a great suggestion, but...what other super awesome area, as deeply scandi scarred as it is, it easy to get into and out of ZRH from?

I think a lot of us stop at E-berg because the access is to simple.

Other places that are not so direct, but still train accessed include Arosa/Lenzerheide, Davos, Flims/Laax, St. Moritz, Airolo, Wengen/Grindelwald, and even further away, Verbier, Gstaad/G3000, it's just that the connection to ZRH is more complex.

Some Euro airlines like Airfrance, BritishAir, KLM among others don't charge for skis. Some American airlines, like Delta, don't charge for skis on transatlantic flights. You'll have to lay the Central Scrutinizer on their transatlantic baggage policies.
    2. all these cheap tickets are for economy, my legs are longs, what airline has most legroom in economy?
They all suck. I end up walking around during the flight and trying to get an aisle seat.

3.looks like teh meals at mt lodge are as much/more as a room? am i just mixed up? are mags buying meals

The prices quoted include breakfast and dinner.

    4. im extremely confused by all this train jumping talk, can one just hang near andermatt
Yes, one can just hang at venduls hotel in Rueras and ski pretty much everywhere in the SkiArena, but there's a train that connects to Andermatt running all day every hour. It's easy, trust me.

    5. can you get abs canister or do you need to bring empty one and fill it?
You can't fly with a full cannister. Lots of shops are set up there to handle filling.

    6. can you just bring boots and rent skis with dynafits?
    Yes, per venduls suggestions.

    C'mon Fogster...you should come.

The Hotel Terminus has been upgraded and is no longer the dirtbag slide, so the boot room dealer is gone.

just trying to say: if you are around Thursday to Sunday and want to see Engelberg and SkiArena go Engeblberg first and SkiArena for the week end.

If you are into other options I think you figured it out. Zermatt / Verbier and so on are all great resorts but somehow harder to get to in combination with Disentis so probably not for this time.

The Train access is very dependent wich way you go. Disentis from Zurich is normal via Chur so there is Arosa, Davos, Laax, Obersaxen (and probably some others) that are kind of along the way.

If you go via Andermatt to Disentis the detour to Engelberg is still a detour BUT just from Zurich and back it is your top choice (in my opinion).
