    D70?

I can get a Nikon D70 with the kit lens for $950. New and warranteed.

Should I do it? Opinions, thoughts?

I think I like the D70 better than the Rebel 350 XT, and the Nikkor kit lens (18-70) is way nicer than the canon kit lens.

Don't try to tell me 20D, I can't afford that for sure.

I've had mine for about a year now. I went to the store and held onto the D70 and the digital Rebel, there was no doubt which felt like a "real" camera.

So far I've loved my D70. The battery life is incredible, I think I've charged it three times and I've shot over 4100 pictures. I've been happy with the kit lens, but I'd like something a little bit longer to get in a bit tighter for ski shots.

I don't exactly take the greatest care of mine, I carry it in a chest pack every time I ski, I use it in pretty harsh environments (desert, dust, sand, campfire smoke) and nothing has ever gone wrong with it.

I'd highly recommend one, that is, if you can't afford the 20D.

Only 4100? In 12 months? Pfft. My "record" is 2000 in one DAY (or rather, about 8 hours). With a not-so-fast-shooting G2, no less. And no, I wasn't trying to take as many as possible, it just happened that way.

Also, I used a D70 in Mexico to take ID shots of sea lions with a long lens... it worked out well. The battery did die after a week, but it was also 100+ degrees every day, so heat was probably a major factor in that.

I'm personally saving for a 20D (or maybe the next version since it's going to be a while before I have it saved up), but then again I have several EF lenses left over from a film body, and 4 of the same batteries used in that series from camcorders and other digital cameras... so yea.

    I think I'd go for a used Canon 10D.

Can you elaborate? (Actually, I've seen someone where I live selling one for $845 without lenses, but with the battery pack/vertical grip, is this a good deal?)

I'm too lazy to find the link, but if you search marmam (a marine mammal geek listserv) there was a recent write-up of the D70 vs 10D vs D100 vs 20D.

Google will be your friend for this quest young grasshopper.

I'm partial to the D70 and D100 but that's because they're the only ones I've used. I've been a Nikon guy since 1996 w/ a full quiver of lenses, so I'm not going to be buying a Canon anytime soon.

I just go a D70 - $900 after the current rebate. Sweet camera - you can upgrade the firmware to V2 so it's very similar to the D70s. Didn't feel like spending the $ for the 20D, and the 10D is meh. 350 is too small to shot comfortably with my hands. Nikon glass is more expensive though.

Do Not buy a new DSLR for a few weeks!

Canon will be anouncing several new cameras. There will be a move toward full frame sensors. As well as a major price drop.

So why did they come up with the EF-S mount (that's incompatible with full frame sensors)? And why is Nikon making DX lenses only useful for small sensors?

I think Canon and Nikon has a lot more money invested in their 35mm lens series than in their new lens series for digital cameras.

I thought the main problem with the lenses for their dslr's was that the lens elements protruded out too far to be able to fit on a normal slr? Edit: I guess it's both.

    Canon 5D? 12 megapixel full frame CMOS = 1 x crop factor. $2,000 U.S.

Accurate info or just speculation? Odds are we'll know by late August.

Yeah, a shitty catalog of shitty lenses. Some of the DX lenses are pretty good, and anyways the lower end bodies won't be migrating to a 35mm sensor (they are currently "full frame") for years unless some miraculous sensor yield appears. Sure the Canon 5D looks sweet. For the $3k for a body you can get a D70 or Rebel with 4 lenses.
