    Somehow, I doubt that.

In Tahoe, most trails are illegal. So what difference does it make if you ride a e mountain bike?

So Tahoe is the center of the universe and what goes there goes everywhere else in the known world? Newsflash for you. I don't live in Cali. I did visit Tahoe and rode the Flume Trail. It was nice and all.

In fact Sam Pilgrim says the same thing about the added weight actually feeling better on jumps.

My friend rented a Specialized Turbo Levo Fattie and we both liked the Haibike better in every way, but I do think it could use more gears. It's 11-48, but only 8 cogs so the gaps are large. It's not a problem finding a usable gear, but a couple more would have been better.
I'm looking at a haibike. The one you tried had the Yamaha or Bosch motor?
I ride in Tahoe, with some steep climbs and I'm wondering which one to get.

Also, what model did you try, and did the weight make any difference on the downhill, or in flat Rock gardens?

    Thanks

You should do it. one of my besties has the yuba spicy curry bike and they love it. they also have 2 kids- a 5 & 3 yo and the husband has even pedaled all 4 of them to events which is hilarious to see https://yubabikes.com/cargobikestore/spicy-curry-bosch

My commuter ebike (Raleigh Superbe ) has been such a daily joy for me this summer. You still pedal, but it's like always having a stiff tailwind.
I ride way more to work and for basic errands and I don't even get annoyed when I forget an ingredient for dinner etc- I just happily zoom down to the grocery store. Definite improvement to the daily grind. although sometimes at the grocery store my crate on the back gets looking like the grinch's sleigh (the cartoon not the mag)

Mine was linked from that post. It has the Bosch motor. I tried all the different motor options on various bikes like Cube, Specialized, and a couple others I can't remember and I liked the Bosch best. It seemed more natural and most importantly it was more fun. It just gave more of a feel of torque. The difference between that and the others is the 2.5X gear reduction on the drive, allowing the motor to spin faster at the same chain speed.

Steep climbs are no problem, but you will find that you have to get your weight a little farther forward or you can lose your balance backward. The motor has more effective torque in 1st and 2nd gear, and at higher boost levels it can surprise you. When I have to restart on a steep hill I cut the power down to the lowest level first so I can get going without spinning the rear tire.

The weight doesn't really hinder you at all on flats or in rocky places. Mine is 48 lbs. The only place it hurts is when you have to get off and walk it up a steep hill. That is to be avoided at all costs because you really feel it. I've only had to do that a few times though, and never for very far, but I don't ride expert trails FWIW.

Being in Tahoe, you will love it on the Flume trail. The climb up is a piece of cake and I can still hang with the non-e bikes downhill even in the sandy parts. With the assist, you can just ride back up the highway to your car instead of taking the shuttle if you are brave enough to deal with the tourist traffic.

You guys are talking about Tahoe and the Flume trail like that's the trail everyone wants to ride. lol...

That's the trail you go on to get other places, or take a pretty picture. Oh, and it's one of the few in the area where bikes are not allowed every other day. Go figure.

I guarantee you're not hanging with regular bikes going down Chimney beach with riders of similar skill.

Why lap up the road back to Spooner, you got a powerful ebike, turn right, take the TRT back over Marlette peak or is that too strenuous for you? not enough battery? Maybe you need a second one. Maybe Nevada state parks will put in a charging station (hopefully solar) at Marlette lake and another at Tunnel creek road, maybe add some slots for revenue generation. Lets see if we can get Elon interested in donating the hardware, as a good Nevada business owner. I am pretty certain that within 2 years, 80% of the bikes Flume trail bikes rents will be ebikes, just think of the traffic on the trail then. Are ebikes legal at Northstar?, they are at Mammoth now, progress?. Probably more about the $$$ at those parks.

Riding in Mid Pen districts land is poaching if you are not disabled, but they do allow exceptions, maybe ebiker's should see if you can get that designation and be legal (no single track though). Cannot be any harder then getting a handicap parking sticker.

I think the machines are amazing technology and I admit I may be destined to own one but after reading comments on the new trail management plans in the Bay Area by hiker groups I am more convinced that these groups are generally crazy and pretty well organized. Their groups are constantly complaining about biker speed and impact as well as tirelessly advocating for their ban from single track trails (disturbs their nature experience, plus bikers have no soul you know). They show up to board meetings and are constantly in land managers ears. How are ebikes going to help this? I think ebikes are going to result in a full stop in the effort to gain more single track mtb access in the Bay area, speed and increased trail use will be the primary weapons used in this battle. They could force MMWD, EBRPD, and Mid Penn to do extensive environmental review for any trail use changes that will involve multiple state and federal agencies. I am sure the RWQCB would love to weigh in and try and use water quality issues to restrict bike access. Do not forget there are federal and state endangered species in those areas, so USFWS gets to put in their two cents as well (though Trump is trying to cut their balls off right now). Any non-fire road trails we do get will likely have to be "multi-user" ie 6 feet wide because of increased speed and use. Welcome to our new world, yeah ebikes!!

We’ve gone over that but I’m curious. They’re definitely the squeaky wheels, but are the Sierra clubs numbers growing? Are they baby boomers dying off? If they’re maintaining their membership are the newbs as ignorant towards bike use?

That yubabike b-bear cites looks nice, but $4.5K? Dang. Here's a cool build if ya wanna DIY it. I'd prolly use a BBSHD rather than a BBS02 for more torque/power and durability. Here's another.

So having a front row seat at all of this... it’s going to take another 10-20 years for all of those assholes to finally die. After that we should be good to go.

Like I said before, most mountain bikers are probably fine with class 1 ebikes sharing the trails and it’s more about the fight with hikers. I honestly don’t care all that much and I’m more concerned by dirt bikes ripping up my favorite trails, but oh well, I deal with it. Hey, I’m happy to come up to Revelstoke and e-shred some trails with you sometime!

Hahaaa, probably could ride one a couple places around here not maintained by the cycling club. I wouldn’t dare speak of them in more than a whisper though. The standard North American opinion prevails here as well, I think. Probably a little more behind the times than Cali up here in the sticks.
Wasn’t sure if your summer travel was like your winter but summer is as good as winter here. Drop by. We even have a touch of smoke to make u feel at home

I missed these posts. That’s great. I was thinking I’d use one in the same way and that Raleigh would be perfect. Stealthy ebike. I wouldn’t worry too much locking that up around town. Front and rear rack and panniers. I wouldn’t hestitate to take a trip into town for whatever . Beats firing up my gas guzzler. Less procrastination is what I need. Fun doing errands, groceries, visiting after pedal rides/skiing

Here’s that vid with the bunch of different commuters . Skip the Star Wars music to the 3:00 mark and the test rides of some cool contraptions start. I think one might be the yuba that b bear linked. Super high end that rig

Trump Administration approves 25% tariff on Chinese e-bike imports.

"almost all electric bicycle companies in the US actually build their electric bicycles in China where the necessary parts are already manufactured and then imported to the US"

Well, that will slow everything down for a bit.

I figure you guys will enjoy this.
Neighborhood guy with emtb stopped to chat because he saw my garage open and me working on stuff. Somewhere along the way his heavy-ass behemoth fell hard and dented/scratched my hyundai.

    I probably deserved that.

He sped away on his moped.

I am so very much less elite than a Sonata-owner. I have the russian taxicab vehicle of choice (per hours of youtube Russian dashcam viewing): the stylish and peppy hyundai accent. It pings on mild inclines running 93 octane, its name is Boris.
