It was pretty good for a hot spring. Outside and pool wasn’t rectangular.

Screwing around on Cal topo I noticed some nw facing terrain north of Beartooth pass where 212 descends towards Red Lodge in a series of abrupt switchbacks. Does this area hold snow? Parking? Good idea or bad? Location 45.0244 -109.4162
I drove up from red lodge and no snow to be had until you get there. Appears any other riding outside of the resort is on cook city side.

There’s all kinds of steep stuff to ski at the top of the pass. An afternoon of scouting can go a long way!

Scout around. There is sweet lines to still be had on both sides of the pass but you have to get creative. We saw a local just after he nailed a super sweet line on the Red Lodge side, but I'm not going to draw anyone a map. We skied just skied the resort on Tuesday and Wednesday. So fun and just back home. Might have skied Thursday but my legs were absolutely fried.
I only rode few times. Mandatory slips to get in via cornice to steep moguls had me enjoying the view and experience more than riding itself. Steep platters didn’t help.
For those of you who’s been to club fields in NZ can tell you that this is US version of it.

It is steep. My daughter took a fall on the entrance to chute 2 on Tuesday and slid into the B-Net. Then she almost was trampled by a Moose at our campsite. Wednesday the snow was so amazing I had to quit before 3 because my legs were shot but Sage raged all the way to the bell. What a great week!
The photo uploader on this site can get fucked. So hard to post a decent trip report anymore. Lightroom processed photos from an SLR still showing upside down. Not worth it. Limited time offer here is the full report. https://www.facebook.com/nateclow/po...24149391466165
^^Great stuff uglymoney, glad you had a good time. That kid is ripping! We saw a few slides for life when we were there, one young woman went through the netting and hit the rocks hard. It was scary to see, but she was not seriously hurt. Anyway thanks for the awesome vids. Makes me want to go back!
Thanks guys. The best part is the people. The operators/owners/family and employees are awesome. Felt just like our little midwest hill where you are friends with everyone. Worst part is 3 months off skiing made it hard to rip at 100% bell to bell but I managed to ski most of the shots accessible off the lift/rolled the heck out of my IT band after lol. Used my 98 Wrens which were good in the soft day...should have had my 88 Brahma's for the refrozen day.
I look forward to coming back sometime in a post covid era so we can enjoy the town etc. Camping was great. We explored the free camping zone a bit and will probably do that next time but Greenbough Lakes was super clean with great camp hosts and we had a huge site on the river.
It had been a few years since we had been through and this was only my 3x visit to the Red Lodge area. The other nice thing is a couple hours closer than JH or BS makes it an easy drive.
Edit to add: Garmin Inreach for messaging was perfect to keep in touch. Whatever service my phone roams on did have voice on a couple of pull off on the highway that look down toward Red Lodge from the very top on the Montana side of the gate. Otherwise NADA and no data even up there - which was awesome for a psuedo car camping getaway.

I planned on car camp at the top but I was getting headache. Not sure if altitude was causing it but that’s something to consider. I drove down towards red lodge for camping. I didn’t want to take my fwd car in some dirt road so I paid $20 for a camp site. Water, bathroom was worth $20 and I had firewood stacked by previous camper to use. When I go back, I would plan for more diverse activities rather than focusing on snowboarding so much.

Sounds like the season may be winding down soon up there from their social media. I'm still hoping to make it next weekend but time will tell. Pray for snow?!
Line Creek (not sure if it's still legal) is close but I'm not sure of how much snow is up there.

There is riding off the pass on trailforks that sounds like a heck of a fun adventure. I was going to bring my bike.
Unfortunately, a family member is having health issues, and I have to bail for next weekend. Pretty bummed as I have been looking forward to this trip for month. Guess I'll be one year older when I do make it to beartooth. At least we still have a little snow in the Wasatch.
I should be up later in the week.
Nice stokey vids, UghMon. Sage turning like a champ.
Funny, I've never paid to camp there. But it rules to have a toilet close.
I'm sure there's plenty of snow and fun. The main dirt road goes for about 6-8 miles iirc, but the one that goes up to the hellroaring plateau is rad. Rode up/down that a few times back in the day. and a roll down the big pass would be something, never done that.
Good on you guys for busting a move and checking it out. It's no cakewalk and can be downright intimidating.
Yeah, tmokes, the entry can be the hardest part. And it's rarely about the vert skied but the awesome environment. Putzing around above 10, 800' can get ya silly too. last time we had a big safety sesh on top and had to sit down for the dizzies. Then skiing, yay!
Give us a conditions update soon, SirVic.
Conditions were great lots of ppl all phenomenal skiers was gusting pretty good up there when I left...
The general consensus was that they thought they could stay open until Friday but probably not Saturday. Hard to say.
Sorry no pics but the Basin was in prime form with multiple people stomping backies off the cornice. After one skier ate shit pretty bad owner came over and basically said if you cant land your trick you can't go big .

Line Creek is awesome, and I believe it is a legal ride, but there is no way it's melted out enough to ride in mid June. It's generally mid July before it melts out.
You can get some riding in down lower closer to town - Silver Run, Palisades, Willow Creek, etc. They're not destination rides, but worth doing if you're already in town.

Right on man, I had a great time.
Add to that Weatherman Draw out Belfry way, kind of a desert-like area that's included in the old Montana Singletrack book. Plus you can hit the Bear Creek Saloon and watch the pig races after riding. Seriously, it's hilarious!
hey, guys -
I just want to thank you for this thread full of stoke --
the closest I have ever gotten to Beartooth pass is At Red Lodge the day my Dad died... and
A-Basin, Memorial Day weekend in 1995 -
there was a thundersnow storm that weekend, and locals claimed it was one of the ten best Powder days of the season
( the thundersnow storm closed the Pali. chair after a thunderclap and people on the chair were claiming their hair was standing on the back of their necks and heads
( can you say lightening strike ) --
anyway -
Love this thread -
( I finally had to stop looking at Padded Room - it was (/ is ) depressing.
carry On ! !!
Be well -
( please) Be Safe...
Thanks for the stoke ! !!
peace. skiJ
There will be a decision made tomorrow morning about whether or not the Basin will make it through the weekend. Check social media and Btb. Com tomorrow for an update. Snow on the way good freeze last night should freeze again tonight.
