The people that had the permit I went on waited like 15 years. I think the wait is now about 18 years. The NPS is revamping the way permit's are allocated and currently I think you can't even put yer name on the list.

A friend of mine took those pics I posted, he has a shitload more, I'll post more of them when I get a chance.

Sickness! The Super Bowl of Rafting.

    1. How many flips/swims? Where?
    2. What was the level(s)?
    3. Best Camp?
    4. Best Meal?
    5. Weather?
    6. Left or right at Lava? Did your kayakers run it?

    I'll answer from my trip

    Flips 5 (2 lava, 209, Hermit, un-named 60ish rapid)
    8K (Sundays) - 25K
Tie - Unkar Hotel or the one above Grapevine on the left
Elk stew + strawberry shortcake - day 14 last dinner out of the cooler
rained for 30min in 20days. 80s-90s everyday (March). Started raining the last night on the river about 4am when we were trying to finish all the booze. Was snowing in Flag on the shuttle.
2 left left (safe) 4 right (2 flips). Kayaks - the run meat of course

    1. 6 flips. 1 Rock House, 1 Upset, 1 Crystal, 2 Hermit and 1 Lava. Everyone flipped or swam except for my raft and my passagers.
    2. Levels fluctuated between 9 and 17 we tried to time all the big shit after phantom to be 17
    3. That camp above Grapevine is sweet.
    downstreem view

    upstream view

    4. Lasagna with peach cobble for dessert
    5. we had about 14 days of 110 degree days and 7 days of overcast days in the 80's. Had about a total of 2 hours of rain
    6. All of our rafts except the guy that flipped 3 times ran right. Lava was scary man as I entered the rapid my wife is screaming WE ARE GOING IN THE LEDGE HOLE. but we didn;t I hit the right edge of the ledge hole and the left part of the V wave which made my right oar pop so all i could do for the mountian wave was spin the boat and crash threw it backwards. Damn that was sick. While scouting we watched a cat flip straight up end over end in the ledge hole.

The Grand Rules!!! I can shoot the shit for hours about that trip. Great pics have your buddy upload them in webshots or something so they are easy to share. Speaking of rafts dump trucking. One of our posse had "the best raft flip ever" in 209. Instead of climbing the white, a 14' Aire mysteried under the hole, cam up vertical (bow first), and flipped over backward with the oarsman still holding the oars. It might be in the Aire catalog next year.

    Here are my pics

Foggy - picture 078 is sweet.

I've been back at work for a week and I am still unfit for work. All I wanna do is go back to the simple life of rig raft, float, de-rig raft, setup kitchen, hike, drink, eat, sleep.....

edit: am off to run the Murtaugh in about 5 minutes. I am pretty stoked since I've not run it before and it hasn't run since 97. The run is mostly class 4 with one class 5 I can't decide on which boat to bring but am leaning toward the Vibe. Hope thats not a bad decision.

another cuople shots of the Mountain Wave. Its Hard to get a perspective of how big this wave is. That raft is a 16 footer and in the second shot the raft is still in the trough with the top 2-3 feet of the wave crashing over.

Great pics. As the guide book says, "no matter what happens at Lava, it will be over in less than 30sec.". I lined up just right of the ledge and tried to ferry left. That didn't happen. I entered the left side of the V with left ferry angle and then got typewritered right. I mysteried under the right side and came out about 40ft. down stream on my right brace. It's so cool on video. I can't wait to go back.

Sweet! We launch for our trip on the 18th of this month! I'm rowing baggage for a Dories trip and me lady gets to go. I'd love to do a private trip sometime down there.

    Cool pics, thanks.
