ETA, looks like there's an actual JR's Garage in Ft. Collins and the owner is aware of the scammer. Turds.

^^ A few times now companies I rep for have gotten new dealer inquiries that look questionable so they ask me to confirm if it is not too far out of the way. One was good the others were scams. 2 of them were able to get LE involved and it caused quite a ruckus.
I know some of you have traveled pretty far for cars before, does it always feel weird? I'm looking at one ~300 miles away and the only way to get there is to drive so I would have 2 cars there if I get it. I don't want the one I would go there in so what, trade it off for a fair bit less than I could get privately just to solve the problem?

Both of my last 2 cars were nigh on impossible to find locally (C30 T5 w/ MT & my E wagon), so I had no choice BUT to shop nationwide for them. For a couple of the wagons I was looking at, they'd only communicate via text and maybe the occasional email. I'd ask if they could talk over the phone and that'd be the last I'd hear from them. Obvious scam is obvious. For my cars I ended up with, they were happy to talk over the phone and answer all my questions. The sellers of my wagon were particularly cool. Took a bazillion extra photos for me, were great to communicate with, answered all my questions, got a PPI from a local dealer but offered to take it anywhere of my choosing (AND at his expense even), and after building enough of a repoir, we both felt good enough about each other for me to book the plane ticket and them to hold the car for me.Originally Posted by gravitylover
The transaction was awesome. I Uber'd from the airport to their yacht club, guy let me fondle it all I wanted, they had it all detailed immaculately for my ride home, so once seeing the car was indeed everything he said it was and more, we walked across the street to their bank and finished the deal. All went without a hitch. Can't believe I'm coming up on 2 years with the car! I've been supremely happy with the purchase. Glad I took the gamble and went for it.
It is a Toyota at the dealer that has been servicing it since new so I am not as concerned with a PPI as I would be otherwise. The saleswoman also seems to have her shit together which is kind of a surprise. I could take Amtrak but if anything went sideways the train back the other way isn't for 23 hours so that would kind of suck and the cost is exorbitant and would eat up half of the retail/trade difference. Heh, I just talked myself into driving up and trading it off
I think this is a go, this dealer seems to be pretty agreeable so gonna head up in the morning and make it happen. I can't decide if I want to pay and extra $1k for a 12k mile Toyota Silver warranty. I don't think so, for me it will be over by June. Waddaya think, is a small market Toyota dealer any more on the up and up than the losers here in the NY Metro?
Anyone want to meet in Plattsburgh in the morning and be a second set of eyes for me?
Of all people on here you should pay the ppi....
I spent some time calling shops I spotted on the map near the dealer and can't get in for a few days. I'll get up there a little early to stop in and ask others. How else do you find a shop to do a ppi when you're 250 miles away?
Seller should be willing to get it done for you. Most times at your expense, but they should at least take it wherever you ask them to.
Then again, it's a Toyota so they might be like "lol no." Haha.
With so many remote, nationwide sales these days, PPIs have become pretty commonplace and should be NBD.

Turned out the Napa across the street does service and what I think is cheap for a PPI. Getting it done now.
I felt like I had to jump, finally found what I was looking for and the POS was less reliable than ever. Turned out to be worth it, a good (great?) dealer experience is pretty rare but that is exactly what I got. All I did was suggest that the price was stretching it and when they sent the final quote it was $2k less than we agreed upon on the phone. I'll get some pics in the daylight tomorrow.
Very cool.
Why would you necessarily have 2 cars there by driving. If you are going to look at a new car, then you go in one vehicle with someone else, so you each drive back- they in the vehicle to took to the site and you in the new vehicle. Or just go by yourself with a trailer or car towbar maybe. Otherwise complete the deal and have the vehicle shipped to you...
Yes, many garages are days or a week out these days if they are trustworthy and highly rated. You can of course do a Google search and read the reviews. But in general as long as the garage you pick is even the least bit reputable, then they should have no problems doing a basic inspection and put it up on a lift. If the seller is not willing to take the vehicle into a garage you find nearby, then I'd wonder what is up with the condition or why they are not willing to take an bit of time to either drop it off or else you make arrangements to go look at the car and you take it to the garage you pick to have it checked over and put up on a lift.
Like I said, I found the NAPA shop and it worked out. I stopped in Harbor Freight and asked some guys that looked like they would know and all three said the same place. Local resources = better than maps
Nobody likes doing 600 miles in a day and then mixed with a few hours of stuff it makes for a 15-16 hour day so that means add a hotel room and meals and other travel expenses and the hassle of finding a place that is dog friendly and paying extra for it. After they offered well more than half of what I figured it would sell for it made the decision much easier to sacrifice those dollars and not have to spend the extra too.
Napa, Harbor Freight, and a dealer willingly knocking 2k off.....godspeed man.

Haha. I thought about that as I hit post reply. Kinda surprised it took this many hours for someone to call me on it.
Ha! Hope it’s a winner for you GL! It’s a Toyota, so odds are it’s going to be great.

I am on the fence about selling a vehicle and have been checking instant offers through Carvana and sites like it the past few months. Checked again this morning and the offer is up almost 4k compared to the beginning of the year. Tariffs. Biggly.

Yeah, this is gonna raise used prices just as they were coming down.
Parts too![]()
GL, fear not increased prices from tariffs when this panty-dropper of a whip is available now on carsandbids!

You're gonna need a stick to beat off the crowd of housewives that came of age in 1989 when they see this rolling pile of manual transmission nostalgia. Good luck.

I saw the unicorn of all time a few weeks ago, AWD, turbo, 5spd! The wife shut me down so quick...
But did it have white wheels?
