My direct experience with modern BMWs in general is that they aren't very reliable. BMW's roadside assistance however, is excellent.

I think Mini buyers have Toyota/Honda/Hyundai expectations, and are disappointed to discover the BMW reality that you can't just ignore it and drive it into the ground.

I can't speak directly to the 2 liter engine in the X1(F48) and Mini Countryman, but they've been producing variants of these turbo 4s for a while now, and if they were blowing up, it'd be all over the internet.

What I can say is that ECUs/electronics fail, and can leave you in limp mode or stranded (or my favorite: the fuel door gets stuck closed). And somehow BMW owners accept this a part of the experience.

That said, my 2002 and my parents' E34 5-series were stellar in the reliability department.

    Good stuff, thanks.

Lol at the 2002, in 1989 I did a round trip from Steamboat to AK and back in a 1971 2002 and the only problem the entire way was a set of burnt points and we lost the muffler and a tire on the Hatcher Pass road. Of course the points went in a rather isolated spot 100 or so miles north of Fort St John so the tow cost 4X what the repair cost. In hindsight it was pretty ignorant, but understandable for a 21 and 23 year old, to have NO TOOLS or basic parts for a vehicle that was semi-exotic for the areas we were driving through but we lived. We probably also shouldn't have taken the car up above the Independence Mine but we did. We lived.

Somewhat ironically, I did carry tools, but never needed them.

I did spin it twice though. Once on a track day, and once on an isolated winding mountain road. It was a clear cold bluebird winter morning, and I was running late as usual. The road was bare & dry without a car to be seen. That is until I rounded a corner into a shaded section covered with a sheet of ice. The back come around so fast, counter-steering to the stop did absolutely nothing. It came to rest a few feet from going over the steep, rocky downhill edge.

    The stupidity of youth.

    .
Yep. Our 3rd X5 (this one has to be the one that works, right?) did that to us and our newborn son on the highway with no warning and very sudden deceleration. BMW bought that car back from us and we've not owned one since.

Then again, my e90 330i (last year of h/o naturally aspirated straight 6) was one of the best cars I've ever owned and still look at those with a smile on my face.

Is a car fun to drive if it doesn't run?

I still see a ton of those (along with F30, E46, and E36) here in the PNW. Mostly in good/stock shape, but lots with scrapes and fart cans too. Got lots of complaints about BMWs, but inline sixes ain't one!

    Doesn’t everyone?

    I’ll take an E46.

Drove a co-workers E30 M3 once and it didn’t really do it for me.

Those are still the best powder skis I've ever owned. 203, wide (~90mm waist and soft and light. I miss those stix.

    Alright, back to the Mazda.

There’s a couple new CX90s in my parking deck at work and I have to say they’re very handsome cars, especially the one in Mazda Soul Red.

If you want a car with a warranty I’d give them a look. CR and C&D both give good marks and it’s probably less expensive in the long run than a 10 y/o Bimmer.

It's got space, the ability to take a tow hitch, that 4 banger probably gets decent mileage, and you can thrash it to oblivion without a care because of what it is. With all the money you save you'll be able to put some sweet flames on the side or other bitchin details.

We're eying the new CX50 hybrid... IMHO one of the better looking small 'budget' SUVs out there. Anyone know anything about the hybrid setup? I think I read its the same/similar as RAV4 through a Toyota partnership.

I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but in 14 days your 2000 model year car qualifies for antique car registration status.

Holy shit, time flies. I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery that I bought new in 2000. It was built in 4/2000 so it's old enough to drink. I hardly think of the truck as an antique.
