Like who? For six years before his back went out he was the best player on the planet.

    .327 .372 .530 .902

only 30ish HR's a season, but 30 used to mean a lot more than 'contact hitter'.

I think he still has the record for Grand Slams in a season with 6 but maybe Arod tied him?

liking the rockies chances to win the west with them finishing at home and the dodger finishing on the road and with the giants who would like nothing better than to take them out of the playoffs.

Good to see some excitement in the NL West come Sept. Looks like it may come to win the division or go home though.

Don Drysdale comes to mind? He's in HOF. Set some pitching benchmarks for consecutive shutouts and scoreless innings. 3 world series titles.

Scoreless innings record was bogus. He hit a batter, but the ump ruled the guy didn’t try to get out of the way. Great pitcher though.

dodgers and diamondbacks can sit home every year imo, they've won their WS's; the rockies need a few spins.

A real gem by Price tonight. 7 scoreless to bring home the W on number 100.

    Now you're getting carried away

    Mattingly career WAR: 42
    Nomar: 44
    Bernie Williams: 50
    Pedroia career WAR: 52
    Johnny Damon: 56
    Dwight Evans: 67
    Edgar Martinez: 68
    Tim Raines: 69
    Tony Gwynn: 69
    Derek Jeter: 72
    Lout Whitaker: 75
    Wade Boggs: 91
    Carl Yastremski: 96

There are a lot of player more deserving of the Hall than Mattingly. His peak was very good (though not as good as Yankees fans who grew up in the 80's seems to think) but very short. He also had 9 season with single digit home runs. Mookie Betts has a career WAR of 34 (more than Mattingly's 5 best seasons combined) in less than 5 seasons). Should he make the Hall if if he is a middling to below average player for the next ten years?

those five years had an ops average of 150. betts gets deserved credit for defense, something that is not going to make a first baseman’s WAR value budge but i dont think that takes much away from him either. i mean ortiz only had ten more war in 40% more games because he was a dh.

If Mattingly was going to make it, you'd think he would have already. Good player, but not HOF worthy. Don Sutton is another Don who is better. Or Don Larsen?

Maybe Mattingly should have been a pitcher like ever other fucking guy named Don.

Of course I am very much pulling for the Rox...would prefer to rep the NL in the WS. But a little excitement along the way is a good thing from a fans perspective.

i’m not even arguing for him to be in the hall. he was just a really good ball player every kid in ny idolized. i don’t know how he could even hit after signing 15 million autographs in ten seasons.
