    Chicago

Looks like going to be in Chicago area for the 4th. Saw that the fireworks are on Sunday and that the taste of Chicago is going on as well. Found some rooms downtown for $150. Questions: Is it worth it to hang out downtown Sunday night, watch the fireworks from the hotel?(confirmed they have "view" rooms for the show)
Is Taste of Chicago worth doing? Or is it a big sweat fest, line fest, overflowing portable toilet fest? Should we bag Chicago Sunday night and come back on the 4th and hang out at night and Tuesday day?

unless you want to see the how the fattest people in the US got that way, the Taste is to be avoided.

there are plenty of neighborhood festivals to be had. Wells street has a good one.

Fireworks are cool but there's usually over a million people in Grant Park for it. It's fiasco of the highest order. The taste is nasty. I'm heading for Jackson Hole for the 4th if that's any indication.

It's all personal preference. I like sittting at the lakefront watching the fireworks. I also enjoy fighting the masses at the taste, well, not fighting the masses but hanging out and eating good food while totally shitfaced with freinds.

Chicago's 3rd of July fireworks are usually pretty damn good.
Human overcrowding can be a bit much, but chilling in a high rise with the simulcast on is civilized fun.
taste is worth doing for lunch - if nothing else you can people watch, and you might just find some interesting food. When its busy and crowded, its insufferable.

    Classic

You might look for a little news paper called the "Reader" while in town. It will have info on the street festivals, and other non Taste things to do.

The Taste is often a seething mass of over weight sweaty people. When you bump in to someone at the Taste and their congealed sweat rubs off on you, it is called "gettin' slimed".

Some Chicago city officials are trying to ban smoking in public places. They just don't understand that Chicago is not a health conscious town.

Thanks. Never been so I might as well jump in with both feet. Going to try and scalp some Cubby tickets on Sunday, god I love hagglin' with scalpers. Definitely want to do the aquarium, shark exhibit etc. Basically, be a gapin' touron. This boy doesn't get to the big city bright lights very often.

Truth: Going to Jackson for the 4th? And you think you are escaping the crowds?

as others have said, avoid the taste. we used to hit thst thing en mas when in HS, get loaded, see some bands at Grant Park and chow down. Now, I wouldn't go ner the place.

Yeah, grab the Reader, and see if any neighborhood festivals are happening this w/e: usually, Lincoln Park, Old Town, Shefield, Wrigleyville, etc 'hoods have some fun block parties where they close down the streets, bands play, and all the neighborhood bars are packed. That's your best bet.

Or, find someone with a boat and go out on the lake for the fireweworks...

Def. go to Wrigley if you can scalp a tix, then stagger from bar-to-bar in Wrigleyville afterwards, always fun. One cool thing to do might be to inquire about tix to one of the roof-top viewing areas at the houses surrounding Wrigley - they will usually sell a few "seats" day of game, and that usuaully gets you accees to a roof (some have bleachers bulit in now), keg beer and some BBQ. Good times.
