    yet another pack thread

So girlguide is looking for a new pack,
    must be:

    30-40 L

Good suspension system (Al stays are nice)

    Light is good

outside pocket that will hold snow shovel, and blade, saw, snow study kit, and be separate from the rest of the pack so rescue gear doesn't get wet

no extra stuff on the outside No need for ice axe loops, ski holders, or compression (it is always full) and they just get snagged on the heli or trees

So far the Bora 35 or the older Dakine Chute are the old packs I have found that do this.

That's going to be tough. May be easiest to use this:

indago will not hold the shovel handle, it is not tall enough. otherwise a 35 tango might work.

44 is too big in the main body too

Spats ya thanks: helpfull as always

    Thanks .

I'll vent my love for ortovox packs again. http://www.ortovox.com/ortovox_en.php Check out the High Performance line. Don't know how easy it is to get them here in the us though.

Edit: They have them here: http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/shop/index.php?cPath=6_166 , but they are a little bit pricey. I remember Couloir magazine had a backpack test some years ago where they included an ortovox pack in a test of bigger backpacks because the pack somehow packed much bigger than the size would indicate.

Edit again: Looks like backcountry.com has ortovox packs. http://www.backcountry.com/store/ORT...1770cu-in.html

You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

Check Lowe Alpine or Marmot. They both make some nice no frills packs - but I'm not sure you'll find one from anyone with a shovel pocket but no compresion straps, ice axe loops, etc. Spats probably had the right idea.

more shameless plugs for www.indigoequipment.com and the BettyRox 60 (probably too big), the Rox 40, and the Rhide. There's a smaller, updated version of the Rhide (the Reve) coming out this fall.

What sort of shovel is she carrying, and what packs did you try? The shovel pockets vary in size depending on the model. The Rox series pockets are huge; I can fit my entire shovel in there with the (non-extended) handle attached to the blade.

was stuffing the Rhyde pack, and the top of the shovel handle was still sticking out. Elvn is too small.

    roxy 28 doesn't have a tool pocket
and the bigger ones have the side loading not the tool box

is the tango tool box bigger then the other ones? can you measure the inside of yours

I'm pretty sure the Tango toolbox is smaller than the Rhide. The large Rhide I have right here has an outside shovel pocket that I just measured at 50cm deep.

I've used the outside pocket of my Rox 60 for all sorts of things, including holding my skins, shovel, probe, etc. I never really understood the reason to have a sleeve for the probe and shovel handle inside the pocket; why not just put them in there loose and save a few grams (and $$$)? What's wrong with having a side access pocket vs. a top access pocket? The side access is easier to get stuff in and out of IMO.

What sort of shovel is Girlguide using and is it stowed in one piece or broken down?

This in a small seems like just what you're looking for, esp. when you put the floating top lid inside and seal it all up with the envelope flap closure.

her shovel handle is 45cm long, but when you put it in the pack and nest it with the blade it is almost 50cm long and 15 high. all this is in 2 piece stowed and its a Voili D handle, would the rox40/60 opening be large enough for this when the pack is full? She loved the opening on the tool box, as it was fast. Heli fuel is not something you want to waste.
do you still have the T44 around to compare?

The Tango is in B'ham and I'm not, so I can't compare directly. I will say that if you/she like the tool box opening then you'll like the side opening of the Rox 40 just as much if not more. The zipper (behind a flap instead of waterproof) is faster and doesn't stick as much since it's in a straight line. I cannot see any problem fitting your whole snow safety kit (avy shovel, probe, saw, rutschblock cord, etc.) in the outside pocket of a Rox 40 when the rest of the pack is full.

One vote for the Bora. I've heard a lot of great comments from females about the Bora lately. Custom molding hip belt, excellent suspension, easy access compartments, and bomber stitching.

no comments on packs but indigo= good people. I bought a pair of cheapo indigo poles and not only are they bomber, they mailed me free baskets when I lost mine on a violent front flip.

    and the winner is ....

    La Meije

front pocket is big enought for all the snow safty stuff, main body is back access only, ski attachments tuck away (diaganol, A frame, or bindings out on the outside)

I guess I'm too late in this thread, but anyway. I got a Dana Design Sphinx a few years back that I love. Customer support is great too. I broke a clip on it when I first got it and e-mailed them to ask where I could buy replacements. The girl asked for my address and shipped me out about a dozen replacements for free. Express, to Australia.

Anyway, I checked their website and the Starlight looks like it might've fit the bill. Too late now.
