Wait didn't BD say F1s can't be used with Tectons??
Anyways maybe we can fill a few more pages of this thread with BS speculation about how a first year binding will perform. Then I can boost my post count and street cred here on TGR. At some point I won't be thejongiest anymore.
Homie, none of us are claiming it will not perform flawlessly. It very well might. We're merely stating that your faith in manufacturers based on the metric of how many professional skiers they sponsor is misplaced. Particularly given the product development histories of various manufacturers--and that manufacturer specifically.
But, yes, post count = instacred.
^^ Not to mention being wary of first year products extends well beyond skiing. It’s just true in general.
To be fair technically the Tecton 12 is a first year product right now, but it’s basically using the same toe as the Vipec with a slight modification and a kingpin like heel. Whereas the Shift is a revolutionary type of binding with more moving parts. We are just being cautiously optimistic.
And beaters like all of us can do things to a binding that no pro skier ever would...
INT - SALOMON HEADQUARTERS - DAY
Looking a bit nervous, skier CODY TOWSEND enters a slick European-styled conference room with a long polished table surrounded by engineers and marketing types. He sits down.
ENGINEER 1
So Cody, did you introduce the Shift on that ski forum you were talking about?
CODY
I did.
ENGINEER 1
And how did they react?
CODY
Overall I’d say it went pretty well. A few concerns but I was able to answer most of their questions.
MARKETING GUY
Do you think you can send us a link so we can get an idea of their initial reactions?
CODY
Well, I can just kind of sum it up for—
MARKETING GUY 2
If you don’t mind, we’d like to see for ourselves just to get the full scope...
Cody cringes and scans the room, looking for some kind of escape.
CODY
Well...
ENGINEER 1
That’s probably a good idea. Why don’t you just send us a link?
CODY
(Looking defeated)
Uhh... okay...
He removes his phone from his pants pocket and begins pulling up what he needs to find. After a few minutes he finishes his task with a shrug and decisive final tap.
CODY
All right, there you go. I emailed it to you all.
Cody begins to rise from his chair when Marketing Guy 1 motions for him to stay.
MARKETING GUY 1
If you don’t mind, can you stick around for a moment in case we have any follow-up questions?
CODY
(Sinking back into his chair)
Sure.
The collection of Salomon engineers and Marketing staff concentrate on their individual laptops in front of them.
At first there’s pure silence as everyone around the table reads intensely. Cody shifts in his chair, nervously. More silence. A beat. Then a chuckle or two.
A few minutes more pass and there are several audible growns and under the breath mumbling.
Finally, Marketing Guy 2 slaps the table, visibly upset.
MARKETING GUY 2
What a bunch of assholes! Who the fuck are these people??!
CODY
Well, skiers?
MARKETING GUY 1
But they barely even pay attention to what’s being said!
CODY
Well... yeah, but—
ENGINEER 1
Fuck these assholes! Who gives a shit what they think??
MARKETING GUY 1
Look Cody, these twats are useless... I don’t think you should waste your time here anymore.

I got to fiddle with my buddy's Shift bindings today, as I was covered in snow from pre-releasing (fucking again!!) from my Kingpins.
they seemed solid enough that I'll be getting them. no question. Can't wait to get off markers.

Summarizing what has already been said. Added a bit more data. Will complete after more ski days
solid intro there Lee.
Personally i think the shift will be kingpin-killer, with the majority of the market becoming a tecton vs shift battle in the time to come. It should be anyway. Then it is all down to where you want to compromise which one you get:
tecton:
main pro: lighter -> you can get a beefier ski (prob makes for a larger difference than 30mm of front elasticity will) and still retain the same weight as a shift, or just go for a lighter set up
main con: no alpine boot compatibility and less elasticity than an alpine binding up front
shift:
main pro: alpine binding performance and full alpine boot compatibility
main con: weight, fiddly mode switch, less adjustable/safe walking mode, unproven at retail end user level
pick you poison. Both a great bindings imo, or have the potential to be anyway. Adding to this freetouring boots are more capable than ever, so getting a good set up that performs spectacularly across lots of conditions and that is as safe as anthing else on the market is a real possibility now. Happy times![]()
Those options are pretty amazing compared to what we had just 5 years ago. I suspect frame bindings will be out of production by 2020 if not sooner.
I like this bit from Lee's review...
"For this comparison between bindings which try to emulate alpine performance, I don't mention platform bindings. Why? Because they suck. They have platforms so they alter ski flex. They're heavy. Touring with them means you are walking up with the equivalent of a gigantic dildo attached to your feet galumphing up the slopes."
Good to see another nice shout-out for the Hoji boot!
2020 is 2 years away, there are still a lot of boots out there that don't have tech fittings
while its upgraded from unicorn status the shift is not really out there yet
Shift does look like it will work but so did every other tech binding in the last 10 yrs
Frame bindings do still work and are still a staple of the new BC skiing heavy ski/ boot/ clothing crowd
I have hopes for the Shift but I think the frame will be around for sale long apres 2020

Good first look Lee. I'm pretty stoked on these for a Whistler do-it-all binding. Looking forward to your long term review re: reliability and whether a higher climbing aid would help. I rarely use the highest riser on my Rad 1.0's but it does come in handy from time to time breaking trail or when you find yourself on stupid steep tracks.
Edit: one thing Lee, is it really $650CAD MSRP? One place in your article is says $549USD and another $649USD. Thx.
