More often than not architects and designers are on too short of a leash to be able to let their imaginations 'go for it'. Many should be, others should be allowed to fly.

Also, just because a 'house' looks cool doesn't necessarily mean it functions well as a home.[/QUOTE]

    Agree on both points!!

Now it’s owned by the owner of Quicken Loans and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They put a fricken basketball court in the basement.
    That's amazing.

So, what's the old house then, a mudroom?

I've long been a big fan of Tom Kundig's work; I once witnessed a "respected" local architect question him on his material choices in cold climates; I thought the guy was going to cry before Kundig was finished. He's an avid skier too!

Cross post from my Italy thread. Just saw Palladio's famous Villa Rotunda, which Jefferson sort of copied for Monticello. It's a round structure with the same pillared facade on four sides.

Quintin Blair House in Cody. Only Frank L W in WY.

Jackson has at least a few in the vein.

Desert SW seems to lend itself really well to that style, as many of the cool ones you find while searching are in the desert.

Is that off 280? I remember a house like that right off the freeway near Woodside or Burlingame.

off topic- I went to a Kahn exhibition in Philly this summer and came across this gem from his high school year book:

this is my favorite thread - at least until more snow falls- keep em coming folks!

here's the home I lived in/ was caretaker for for 5 yrs. (I lived in the guest house off to the right)
It was an interesting home-that's what got me really interested in homes/architecture/ design. Although I liked the location better than the home- lots of wildlife. but with it being up on stilts, the super cold was aalllways causing issues

there are some more random homesteads in the west that are old cabins but not the same as new england where sh*t is oooollldd
My families place in So.VT. Originally built in 1802. It was the school house.

    Very cool.

Some family in Salem has a place built in the 1860s and I lived in brownstone of the same era for a long time. Almost bought a 1930s tudor revival. Old is good.
