Who has the worst taste in architecture?

    The Russians, by a mile.

These are Dachi and traditionally look like the last photo. Making highlands ranch look beautiful with its conformity. We won't even talk about the apartment blocks.

I like those more than I like the Frank Lloyd Wright bunker style homes.

I like it. Looks like a messed up movie set or Disney World gone horribly wrong. It least there is character. Won't find that in H.R.

Not even the Russians can stop Highlands Ranch from sucking.

    dachi is plural for Dacha.

A dacha is a country house of which there are generally two kinds, fancy retreats from the city (like those pictured) and small intensively gardened private plots out from the city. Any family that wants one pretty much has the ag kind (usually under an acre in size) with a fairly simple building (most often brick). Those pictured are the fancy kinds. Russian families supplement a tremendous amount of their diet with food they grow themselves (and either consume or sell). Often times even the buildings in "neighborhoods" of dachi that are modest and devoted primarily to ag contain one or two absurdities.

With the rise of the "new Russians" ("nouvwee ruskee") a lot more have the bling to build the fancy ones.

Obviously, you've never been to San Bernardino County. The new slate of track homes out there are the most inhumane dwellings I've ever seen. Think of the cheapest "new" house you've ever seen multiplied by 100,000.

Americans are much worse. The "snout homes" that cover recent suburbs are some of the ugliest dwellings ever.

I love those Russian places. They have so much personality. Sometimes that personality is a bit schizophrenic but it all adds to the fun

Definitely much better than the sensible US houses:

Available in any colour you want as long as it's beige.

Those houses scream "Oh god, they're laughing at us again. Tell them to stop laughing at us."

The architecture isn't as bad as this:

This development in China looks a whole lot like the waterfront development at Vauxhall, London...

    haha - too funny.
It does look kinda like bad chinese architecture, though.
    I got it from www.badarchitecture.org

I forgot to read the fine print
Ok, back to the point, I promise. As I reached Vauxhall Bridge, I was greet by an absolutely huge development project. I stopped. I gasped. I stared. I couldn't believe my eyes....Had someone transported me to Beijing or Hangzhou? This thing had China written all over it, from its complete disregard for scale to its unabashed love for, well, whatever you call those random wavy things on the roof. Its unwillingness to fit in with the surroundings, its disregard for history, its likely astronomical price and rather random location- all of these brought a smile to my face. I miss China. If things were right in the world, this place would have a name like "Morden City London" (misspelled on purpose) , "Forever Garden New Town" or "Renaissance New York Soho Modern Home". If I was in charge, though, I would call it "China-on-the-Thames".

Are you kidding? That's brilliant. No one has ever thought of combining an English Tudor cottage, a lighthouse and a glass house until now.

Is that a double-wide next to that house in back? If so, that's my kind of people!
