    Gunnison / CB Mags

So true. Once it’s open, N face stays in excellent shape . Great chalk and minimal jumbo bumps.

I live on Monarch Pass and, while CB is my gold standard, this area is great. Hit me up if you head this way. Close to campus!

    Is this actually near Gunnison???

I have never seen ANY peak look so much like the Matterhorn of Switzerland!!!! 😍

    For comparison:

Granted, there is a huge size difference between the two peaks, but just the shape and setting similarity is amazing.

Planning a CB stop part of a Rockies ski tour. Typically, is any part of the North Face open early January?

Pretty sure someone just used a Matterhorn photo in a gunnison article or something. Those peaks are identical.

In an average year, the only steeps would be west wall and Horseshoe, and maybe the headwall. But every once in a while it's been open wall to wall around New Year's.

Another thing to consider is the variation within the resorts. For example, Breck moved the snowstake a few years ago to a favorable spot where they report a lot more snow than the rest of summit county. I don’t care how you feel about them moving the snow stake, but the point is that where you take the measurements matters.
this is what he says about the source of his average numbers:

Column three (both tables): Average annual snowfall. By utilizing the extensive monthly statistics compiled for avalanche forecasting, we can project reliable seasonal averages for the period November 1 through April 30. Within each region there is at least one area with a minimum of 30 years of complete monthly data that can be used to index snowfall to any closely correlated area in that region. Discrepancies between averages presented here and those advertised by ski areas are due to several factors: 1) Ski areas don't always measure snowfall over the monthly periods required to make such broad, even comparisons; 2) Ski areas may not keep long-term snowfall data, and utilize averages over shorter periods of time--typically five years--for marketing purposes; 3) ski area snowfall figures are occasionally "white" lies--marketing directors blow smoke with anecdotal information and inflated figures. More often legitimate data is collected from a choice snowfall area and marketed as representative of the entire mountain. Altitude comparisons from columns 1 and 2 can be revealing here.

I lived there for about a year before I got tired of being cold, lonely and broke. Crested Butte is a beautiful town, but yea, if you want to make friends and ski pow, you need a sled. CBMR doesn't get as much snow as the places around it. Monarch is fun and has some fun terrain on the pass. Not gnar (at least that I checked out) but definitely fun.

CB is also cold, and I don't think anyone here has pointed out just how fucking isolated that place feels in the winter. You are in a valley with one way in and one way out and not a whole hell of a lot of people around. Did I mention its cold as balls?

In the summer its one of my favorite places on earth and the mountain biking in and around CB is amazing. Hartmans is a blast too.

Average price of a lot in old town is now $650K...which makes it a bargain compared to Telluride!

Thanks for all the advice and willingness to show a noob around, i will take you all up on that. I have already started dropping the snowmobile hint. That may take a little work
I grew up in northwestern Wyoming, I know all about cold and isolation, I am kind of looking forward to getting back to it (in a twisted kind of way). And getting back to a small town has has been a long time coming!

It will most likely be after the first of the year before I am there full time, once I am there we may have to do a maggot night!
