Telefest (or as the industry has now dubbed it, backcountry fest) is usually a great party. But without snow, I'm not sure what will happen.

In the past Hoodoo has not even opened when the pack is less that 24 inches. Right now the snow pack is 18.3 inches, the humidity is 103%, and the web cams look like it is raining at Hoodoo...

Sadly, yes. It's been like this whole season, seems like.

Fret not. I just bought a dirt bike and I'm headed to Jackson and Big for the remainder of January. It should dump buckets while I'm gone. You can thanks me now.

now that i have fully functional lungs again, i'm back in the gym every day. swim, cycle, circuit, climber, rower. trying to squeeze in some bikram but probably not going to happen. i won't be in my best shape but hopefully not a complete pushover for a tourist. i'll be lucky to get 6 more days at timberline before alpental.

honestly i sorta like getting my ass kicked if i can put up a little fight. my bigger concern will be not trying to keep up with people i can't keep up with. i was there in 2016 and i've seen the trs. i can't afford any more knocks on the noggin.

speaking of which, have i been acting normal lately?

Yes, up to this point...you did. I am hopeful the change is somewhat near and last part of Jan and Feb is much improved. Did I say hopeful? I meant I dream\pray.

I'm really liking a few of the things I'm seeing in the weather app. May be time for another video commentary.

long story short: the ridge of death is increasingly letting storm systems come through. After a few dustings and some rain mixed in over the next 9 days, the next storm system offshore is looking like it will pick up colder air aloft and both major forecast models are in agreement. This is making the week after next look pretty promising in terms of getting some dryer accumulation on top of the wetter coverage that we're likely to get in the next 10 days. Disclaimer: I don't know shit about shit. Plus this is 12-13 days out we're talking about, so who knows. Still, hope beats depression.

Mattig, I want your picture in Obama/Warhol-esque lithograph with the caption: “Hope: It Beats Depression.”

At least all these shitty temps seem to minimize chances of a persistent crust facet shit sandwich setting up underneath the next actual decent sized storms ... Or so I hope ... I haven’t even broken out my skins yet this season to get obs but so far I haven’t seen any remarks in COAA obs about such things developing above and beneath the rain/fog crusts.

Semi-stable PWLs had been developing in Tahoe/Sierra each of the years with early season droughts in 2012-2015, and we had a really bad one set up in Jan 2012 that killed 2 people in separate accidents and also caused many close calls when it finally did snow big time at the end of Feb 2012.

I’m guessing this slow start is a bigger concern for PWL development out in the Ochocos and Wallowas?

Definitely went freezing rain/fog later in the day. It looks like tomorrow afternoon is setting up for some good stuff hopefully.

This week is sloppy, although I will say NOAA is a bit more pessimistic than the other models

^ agree matt. Warm Thursday. Like 48-50°f & 50mph on the desert. 6500ft fl. / Friday for me. Summit opening this weekend. That could be dangerous.

We got out last Sunday after going stir crazy.
Weather cooperated and the snow was nice: thin wind-buffed "pow" and edge-able firmness.
    Had the place to ourselves.

Bingo. Things are not looking great at the moment. Buried PWL from thanksgiving that has some huge potential. Looks like slopes of less than 30degrees for my hut trip later this month

Thanks Bobby, unfortunately I am unable to cancel my wallowas trip... The invaders will have to make an appearance next year, unless a Portland Mag wants to take some up north on my behalf.

This storm inbound to Hood looks, erm... interesting. Snow this morning, then rain, then back to snow tonight. I won't say how much snow because I don't want to jinx us, but tomorrow could be a good day to play hookie.
