    TR- First Century

Well, it took me over nine hours, (Actual riding time 7 hours, 8 minutes) but I completed my first 100 mile ride today, fulfilling my goal of riding a century before I turn 30.

I slept in later than I hoped, since I was up late last night watching the DBT live DVD. SO instead of an 8 AM departure, I clicked into my pedals at 11. The first few hours I kept things going at an easy spin, trying to keep the heart rate below 130. After about 2.5 hours and 35 miles, I took my first rest stop. I stopped at a Cumberland farms for some more Gatorade and water, and put on another coat of sunblock. I'm probably going to have Titanium Dioxide permanently embedded in my epidermis after this summer.

Round 2 had me pedaling to the hippy/homo haven of New Hope PA, which involved some steep climbing in Northern Bucks County. I stopped for lunch in New Hope, where I made the mistake of ordering a burrito. I thought a tortilla with chicken and rice would be a good meal to fuel me for the final 30 mile push. Big mistake. I ended up with an upset stomach. The Red Bull I sucked down to kickstart the metabolism didn't work either.

But the worst part was getting a flat, and possibly breaking an axle (not sure, haven't inspected the hub yet) 20 miles from home. Didn't help that it was on the only stretch of 4 lane on the whole ride. As I have said before, fuck PENNDOT in the ass with a flagpole. Goddamn pinch flat from a pothole.

The last 20 miles were a race against the sun. Rode the final 10 miles without the Oakleys. But I got home and I still was able to walk. It actually wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I'll be doing another one.

NIce, My furthest ever ride was about 75 mile look 2 summers ago. I'm hoping to get some longer rides in this summer too century ride included. I think there is one coming up soon actually.

    Congrats on that mile stone.

Nice job! There is nothing like seeing the mileage on the bike computer going from 99.9 to 100.

I did a 3:56 century last summer, that time was aided by the fact that I had been racing for the months leading up to it and the first part of the ride was somewhat downhill with a large group, alot of ground was covered in the beginning.

7 hours 8 minutes.....and you think that is good? Whaddya kiddin? Eating a burrito? Lunch after 35 miles? Keeping your HR under 130? Well, maybe if your fat, outta shape, haven't been on a bike for a very long time....but, based on your description of your ride, I guess the best thing that I can say is that you completed it-- but, you must have very low expectations....a fairly fit cyclist should be able to complete a century in around 5h15m or 5h30m. Studs (and strong groups using a rotating paceline) can do sub 4h. At 7 hours, your average speed was about 14.28 mph.....I know 14 year olds that can average higher.....but, at least you did it. Now try again, with some training. Your goal now should be sub 5h30m (a bit over 18.18 mph) and that would be respectable.....7h+ is almost 'laughable'......

what HJ said. jesus, isn't about the journey? He rode 100 freakin' miles and "only" averaged a little over 14 miles an hour. Good on ya Plakespear. I doubt my body could handle 100 bone jaring, teeth rattling miles on my CAAD 4 Cracknfail.

Goddamn, no shit. what an a-hole. not to mention how can you calculate an expected time for a century without taking into account amount of climbing, wind conditions, lack of partners to take turns pulling, etc...

it took me 3:45 to ride 43 miles the other day that included about 5500 feet of climbing and brutal winds coming over the mountain passes directly into my face. Actually, it did get laughable as the wind was so strong, that when i was up out of the saddles pedaling in granny gear (which is tough enough) i was averaging about 4 mph!!! I guess I suck too, but i was happy as my time for each pass was only a bit off my best time when I only do one.

    congrats plake.

Here's a century with plenty of climbing, winds, heat, cold,...you name it... and a fit rider should be able to complete it in 5h30m http://www.fallcentury.org/ (actually this ride is 93 miles in length)
Not to diminish the effort-- as I said, at least he completed it. But, the 'century' idea is more a mental thing (checkout RAAM if you think otherwise). And 7h+ is a start, but, unless the rider is outta shape, riding old gear (heavy, etc), it's like saying that 'I ran an 8 minute mile'....yeah, good for you...what are you gonna do next? Flame on.....

I hope this is why you blew off my wedding after party...which sucked by the way, but there were Russian hookers downstairs.

Actually, I blew off your wedding because I didn't feel like mugging the tourists from Ohio in to afford the Russian hookers.

Homohip- Go fuck yourself. Considering I could barely ride at all from Oct 2003 until April 2005, I wasn't expecting much. And this is actually a SKIING forum. We just talk about cycling when there's no snow. Oh, and if you ever want to brag about how badass you are on skis, there are at least a dozen people here who will outski your ass any time, any place.

I can't believe I actually validated this prick with a response.

Started at 11? No wonder you were racing the sun.

One of these days, when I'm feeling really good, I'll have to do a century, so I can get back to feeling bad. congrats.
