When I first moved to UT from TN, I joined the local ward scout troop to meet the neighbors and all that.
good folks and I actually attened that camp where that boy got lost
my first taste of the Unitas.

went on a trip up to & throught Jenny lake in to GTNP
we would hike and the heavy gear got canoed in, we would portage the canoes seemed to go back lake after lake.
my first taste of the Tetons

While I loved the mountains of east TN & West NC where I lived before that, this was a whole new thing.

I didn't last the year in scouts, and went on to Catholic High School and new and different friends, but bless those scout leaders of that local mormon ward for opening up this southeastern kids mind to the local surroundings.

Many not so hot experiences with camp fuel loving scouts in the years in between in both the Uintas and So Utah not withstanding, scouts like everything else in life depends on the people involved.

I thought the same thing when I first saw the pics on TV

but whats more weird is the "mormon" T shirts they both have on!
Question? : How many kids outside of UT are forced to wear T shirts under their outershirts?

"there is somethin weird going on in dem there hills" !

    Them mormon t-shirts aren't mormon t-shirts...

That has nothing to do with anything.

In the LDS religion, you don't wear those garments until you go through the temple, which happens later on in life-not at this age.

I was once on a scouting trip for a few days to Notch Lake in the Uintas. During our trip, one of my friends parents did the couple mile hike in to visit for the day. When they left back for the trail head, at the base of Baldy, the mother somehow got on another trail and never made it back the vehicle that night.

It was pretty crazy seeing all the adults at camp freaking out and having to tell my friend that his mother is lost. Anyways, she was completely lost and decided to just walk as straight as possible and ended up in the foothills area of Kamas where she located a house, walked inside, and used the phone to let people know where she was.

Anyways, I had no idea there was a seperation between church and scouts until I was much older. The two are so entwined together, I don't think it is right.

wow...seeing how this tread is all over the map anyway, here are some fun things on the LDS underwear. BTW its not a T-shirt, but can come in a modern two piece. Check out this description:

In those days [the 1970s] garments were one-
piece, made of thick nylon, and cut like very loose
teddies; they had a scoop neck and little cap sleeves
and they came to the knee. The amount of coverage
wasn't accidental: One of the purposes of "garments"
is to make sure that Mormons eschew daring clothing.
The other is more directly theological: The
underwear's holy nature is expressed by small markings
sewn into the cloth over each breast, the navel, and
one knee. (The markings signify comforting homilies
like "deal squarely with your fellow men," and are
intended to serve as reminders of temple covenants.
The symbols themselves derive from the fact that
Joseph Smith was a newly initiated and enthusiastic
Freemason when he originated the Mormon temple rites
in 1842, and so the Masonic compass and square appear
on the left and right breasts of the Mormon garments.)
The garments had one other characteristic that, if not
actually biblical, did have something to do with
creation: Women's garments were slit in the crotch,
very generously, so that they flapped open and left a
    girl's greatest fascinations exposed.

When a pair of holy garments gets worn-out, the devout owner will take a pair of scissors and cut out the embroidered symbols. Then the remaining fabric can be used for rags or what have you. The symbols themselves must be disposed of in a manner suitable to holy relics. Reverential burning, possibly.

Furthermore, a deceased Mormon will be buried in his or her temple garment. Dressing the corpse is done by the ward's Relief Society president if the mortician is not an endowed member, so as not to reveal anything. (As far as I can figure it, the Relief Society is a quasi-charity group organized in each ward.)

anyone here remember cult of the dead cow (cDc)?

When I was in cub scouts our activities consisted of making ornaments for christmas trees, dining room table center pieces and candle holders. What ten year old kid likes to make table centerpiece arrangements? Our Den Mother never even asked us if we wanted to go camping.

My boy scout troup was not church affiliated. We concentrated on homemade explosives, smoking weed and building big fires. If that shit went down now, I think the Patriot Act would have all the leaders in jail. I learned many important dirtbaggin skills in Troup 76. And no, I have heard nothing of your accident Woods.

I take it you didn't read the shirt?

At her age she is probably already married with a couple kids and about to file for bancruptcy.

    from KSL:
There are unconfirmed reports that 11-year-old Brennan Hawkins has been found alive.

Volunteers have been called back to the command post. Unconfirmed reports say that Brennan was found near Lily Lake, about 3 miles from the East Fork of the Bear River Boy Scout Camp Area.

There has been a lot of commotion near the command post in the last few minutes. Several Sheriffs vehicles have been seen going down a nearby road, and a Summit County Ambulance was dispatched.

The family has been taken to an area, and volunteers have been returning to the base camp. Volunteers have been seen hugging. A medical helicopter has been seen hovering over the area.<

A horseback rider told KSL Reporter Amanda Butterfield that Brennan had been found. This report has not been confirmed with the Summit County Sherrifs Dept.

Was that the T'Ville troop that got tossed out of the council, or the St. Mary's(forest fire) troop? I was in troop 176- much of the same, yet still focused enough to get my Eagle.

I am surprised that most of you wouldn't want your kids involved in scouts. Utah is a bit different than Connecticut, but scouts is what you make it. As a father, I will want my son involved. I, in turn, will be involved. That is the only way you can be sure of what is being taught.

In the end, it will depend on how many of his friends are involved. 5 of my good friends are Eagle scouts. I guess I was lucky. We didn't see it as a geeky thing to do. I know it isn't like that everywhere. I was just happy to find a group of people who wanted to camp once a month, and learn some really cool shit. The leadership skills I learned at 13, I use today. I still put the fact that I was an Eagle Scout on my resume. It has given me an edge for jobs several times.

I will agree that the BSA has made some bad descisions lately. Their stance on homosexuals just pisses me off. Unfortunately this stance, and the lack of fathers willing to volunteer, will lead to the end of scouts as I knew it. That is a big reason for their "religious right" label they wear today.

Your sons are lucky. You all love the outdoors, camping, kayaking, skiing, etc. They will all grow up appreciating these things too. I had to get this through scouts.
I like living where the Ogdens are high enough so that I'm not everyone's worst problem.- YetiMan
