Sheds - Kit or Build From Scratch?

My house needs a shed, something in the 10'x12'-ish range. I'm no carpenter, but I'm reasonably handy and I've built a deck before so a simple shed doesn't seem overly ambitious. Thinking single-pitch roof, one door, no windows or other fancy bits, on-grade foundation.

I guess my real question is whether I can actually save any money building from scratch. Perusing the models outside Lowes and HD has left me pretty unimpressed. Looks like a lot of cheap ass materials and a lot of hidden costs when you start reading the fine print. Oh, you want a floor? That's extra. Roofing? Extra. And so on.

I put up one of these (size was ~8x10, didn't have the window)
    https://cedarshed.com/products/gardener-storage-kits
Comes in seven panels - floor, four walls, two roof sections - no cutting required
Materials were pretty high quality, although the floor was a little spongy with ~1/2" plywood on cedar 2x4 joists.
Had one person help me for about an hour to put panels in place and tack. Took about two hours total once I had the ground leveled. Easy Peasy

Damn son...$2700? I've wondered this as well...seems like could put a single pitch structure together for much less...but I too am not a carpenter...still I think I could get it done. I already have a concrete slab that's about 10'X12' to accommodate such a structure.
Damn shame, throwing away a perfectly good white boy like that

Ive priced it both ways and the pre manu sheds are fairly reasonably priced. Dimensional lumber is cheap enough but the hardware and sheathing add up quick. Add a window and you are bankrupt

I'm waiting for a deal on a tuff shed type or a shit ton of free lumber

2700? Link on his version said 1700 when I just looked. How would you attach framing to existing slab?

I built an 8x12 shed close to 30 years ago.- Foundation is 6 12in piers--the kind with a piece of wood on top, not the ones with metal imbedded with pressure treated plates--T 111 siding, plywood floor. The thing has been bombproof, snow proof, waterproof, hasn't moved (maybe because it's crammed full of lumber from this and that project, through some pretty epic donner lake winters. Looks better and definitely cheaper than anything you could buy.

It's $1779 for the 6'x6' version...sounds like the one he went with was 8'x10', which retails for $2629 on their page. I figured there is a delivery charge that gets you around $2700.

ETA: I think concrete screws or nails just to secure frame down to the slab.

You can easily get a 6x14' enclosed trailer for $2600. A little more utilitarian.

I'd love to go the container or trailer route but I'd have to crane it over my house. No bueno!

I have been shopping sheds off and on.

the pre build sheds look really nice.

You pick one, they truck it your place and drop it where you want it.

    done and done.

Pros of a kit is ease of installation
Cons may be difficult to modify and could void the warranty if you do. Other than that not much else.

Pros from scratch it can be customized to your needs and layout
Cons are wear and tear if proper materials are not used.

Seen lots of them and I still like the ones made from scratch. It adds more character to a property IMO

Its been awhile since I built the shed BUT consider that you might want it to be tall enough to put a regular sized door in it if its not already ?

I went to a small local independant lumber yard where they had shed kits and what buddy the head guy said to me back in the day was that regular shed kits were all too low to put a real door in BUT with a few keystrokes on the calculator for a little bit extra $ he gave me a 1' taller shed so I could instal a used door with a door frame I made from 2x6

it made for a much nicer shed

We had 10x12 Tuffshed custom ordered, delivered and built for right around $3k, real nice solid unit. They run sales from time to time, keep an eye out.

Important to note that Tuffshed, like Sherwin Williams paint, you can't get the real deal unless you buy it from the actual company. The Home Depot/Lowe's version ain't no Tuffshed.

My shed came ready to assemble from a guy that builds sheds. He doesn't usually just hand over the pieces but my dad convinced him to do it.

The advantage of a pre made shed is that two of you can get it built and painted in a weekend.

The sheds at Home Depot were the same price as what I paid but were of notably inferior quality. 2x3 construction vs 2x4, shittier hardware, etc.

If you have any framing skills and time, what your looking at can be done DIY for far less than a $3k tough shed. If you don't have those, save yourself the work/ frustration and have them do it.
