My wife has coached a rec league team for a few years, and they schedule a practice after the last game for a “kids vs. parents” game. It’s a big hit.

that's a great idea. our team struggles with parental commitment in general compared to all the other teams in our league. it appears to be an optional activity for many so people regularly didn't show up for games or practices or were late all the time. i wasn't even the official coach but our coach was gone more than half the games and practices and nobody offered to fill in -- same as the previous two years -- which is why i ended up coaching last year as well. if i didn't do it, they wouldn't have played. i ended up being the sacrificial lamb on game days explaining to the frustrated opposing coaches why we didn't have enough players to split into two 4x4 games like everybody else (which is the format of the league).

it was pretty frustrating and i hope i can find another situation for the boy next season because he loves soccer and wants to play and there are only a couple of other kids on his team who feel the same way.
