    Skins for Bros

First of all, yes, I already used the search function.
After slowshoeing up to Round Top on Saturday I realized that I must get some skins for my Bro Models.
If you have skins for your Bro Models and would recommend my getting the same type, please let me know. I would also appreciate any tips on using skins as well as where to get a deal on skins. Any other advice is welcome too. Thanks!

Don't have Bro Models but would definitely recommend Coll-Tex skins if you can get them on your side of the pond. In my experience, they do not come off and have pretty good grip and glide.

Rob and I have BD Ascensions for our Bros, Vets.
    So far, so good.
I know Rob probably has 30-40 days on his, as compared to my 5-10 days.

Below Zero, thanks for the link. I need all the help I can get.
Arno, thanks, but they seem to be hard to come by here.
Splat, these are the purple ones, right? What size did you guys get? Also, do you have the ClipFix or the Standard ones?

    Still on sale:

For the Bros, I'd prolly go with the 120s and trim-to-fit. Call 'em to see what they've got left. For skis that wide, the clipfix isn't absolutely necessary and it often tends to fall off anyway.

    Good luck.

Edit to add this link on trimming skins:

Get the purple Ascensions, 120 or 130mm. Trim them to shape (it's easy, really). Don't get the clip-fix, I'd get the standard (no tail attachment) and do THIS, which works GREAT. I've used a rat-tail ascension for about 80 days (maybe more) and it's absolutely fantastic. Easy to pull off without taking your skis off, too.

If you want to be boring and not do any homebrew, buy the STS Tail Attachment kit thingie from www.bdel.com, and use that.

Or just get the cowhide glidelite skins with the STS system pre-installed. But I haven't used those. Rat Tail kicks ass over any commerically available system.

Cowhide glidelite and the purple Ascensions are the two best skins.
I used to have a linky for a complete skin test (glide, grip, icing, etc.) from about 3-4 years ago and those two were the clear winners.
Right now I have glidelites, and have had ascensions - both are good.
    I prefer the STS tail.

Hey, whaddya know, here it is:

    Good link, Sphinx.
I've had no problems with the Clip Fix on them.
    You'll want 130 mm.

i've been more than happy with the 120's and can't see an advantage to the 130's since that portion of the ski never sees snow on the way up.

the glidelites have been what i've used the past 2 years and they are all i need for everything but boilerplate. check to see if mountain gear still has their seconds in stock. they'll run you ~$80-90.

No need for 130mm skins. By the time you cut 130s down so that you've got some edge showing you'll have cut them down to the same size as a 120 ends up being.

I'm using the same 120s that I first cut for Karhu Jacks and have since used on Teledaddies on my Bros with no problem.

I'm not a fan of clipfix skins preferring the GlideLight style tails (though my bros are long enough that I can't really do the tails and just depend on the glue (for now and untill the glue stops sticking)>

I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I've always found tail attachments to be unnecessary. You do need to keep the glue in good shape though

that's true but it takes too much time and effort to keep the glue perfect. the tails save my tours a few times a year but tape works just as well.

I think it makes a difference where you are, i.e. wet snow or not, and how fat the skins are. In WA my skins often got very wet and tails helped stop the whole lot from falling off. In MT skins are hardly ever wet so tailless is working for me fine. And the fatter they are the better they'll stick.
I intented to add a tail to my latest pair of skins but haven't gotten around to it since they stay on as is. They are some slightly trimmed 95mm ascension mohair skins, I like the ascension skins, less bulky, nice glide.

Clipfix work fine for me - Think it's just a case of getting length set perfectly so there's enough tension.

No tail attachment does o.k. but taking them off you'll eventually end up ruining the glue on the last few inches of skin.

eh, sort of. My clipfix are fine in snow at about 20F. Colder and they're too tight, warm spring conditions the skins stretch too much so the rear flops.
