I'm gonna buy some farmland down the road from Cooperstown and open The Hall of Very Good. Anyone interested? We'll make a fortune.

Didn't I tell you about my idea for an alternative to the HOF? I'm thinking Ballston Spa, close to Saratoga and not far from Cooperstown. Bar, of course. Ted Williams frozen head in a big jar as the centerpiece. Maybe a little ice fog flowing out for effect. Cage match every week between Sox and Yanks fans. With chains, no knives. Special exhibit all about the cocaine years, with guest lectures by, well, many. And on. It could be a lot of fun. And profitable. Except for the legal costs.

Can you or anyone else make the case for why Martinez deserves to be in the HoF over Fred McGriff?
Crime Dog had 184 more HR, 243 more hits, 289 more RBI, scored 130 more runs, and actually played the field.
I'm not even saying McGriff deserves to be in the HoF, but compared to Martinez, he's a no brainer.
The 2 guys who I think deserve serious consideration who are virtually ignored are Omar Vizquel & Jeff Kent.
Vizquel is an 11 time Gold Glove winner who's career stats stack up quite nicely when compared to Ozzie Smith, the most overrated guy in the HoF in my opinion.
Kent is the all time leader in many offensive categories for 2B. His detractors like to mention his mediocre at best defense, and these same hypocrites vote for Edgar Martinez on their ballots, a guy who never even sniffed mediocre and was just plain awful with a glove.
"The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size."
First off, Edgar was moved to DH not because he was awful with the glove, it's because of injuries. Vizquel is seriously overrated; very good glove for many years. Kent was an asshole and his candidacy is hurt as a result.
All of your stats are basic counting numbers. Yes, McGriff has more than Martinez, and longevity is worth something, but McGriff had 3 more seasons of plate appearances; Edgar would make up that gap pretty quickly in 1500 plate appearances. Also, you ignore stats like BA (.312 to .284), OBP (.418 to .377), Slugging (.515 to .509), OPS+ (147 to 134). McGriff played the field, sure, but his DWAR shows that he was worth -9 WAR "more" than Edgar; I don't think that's a reason to celebrate him. As for OWAR, Edgar has that one (66.4 to 55.5), and that, BTW, is a counting stat. So in 3 full seasons less, Edgar accumulated 11 more WAR. That is hudge. For me, it's also the eye test on top of all this. McGriff was a very good player for a long time. Edgar was one of the most feared hitters in the game.

I think McGriff deserves more credit than he's gotten, and had he hit 7 more HRs he might be in. But he wasn't as good a player as Edgar, he just played longer. Your argument is the classic "do we value longevity or do we value peak performance"? I think we should value both, a player with a shorter career damn well better have some badass peak numbers. But Edgar does.

Only hitter that Yankee closer guy ever feared. Baseball writers, though. Not players.
without looking, crime dog put up his best numbers before offense exploded. i like edgar but i don’t think i’ve seen a dh that deserves to go in. vizquel never struck me as a hall of famer, maybe i’ll change my tune though.
vlad though, that guy had it. i remember the first time i saw him in at the big o, a few months to 20 years ago. the sound his bat made when he connected.

Fucking hell, work on replacing that bat in your lineup (near-league low HRs) before coronating him.![]()

Hell I still wish he'd come back. How hard can the job be? C'mon.
