Starting at forty for the basic two wheel drive srfive up to over seventy for Trailhunter. There are nine trim levels.

So a 4x4 4runner starts at $50K, is that the complaint?
About the same as an F150 XLT 4dr. or a Honda Pilot. Seems in line with similar vehicles.
How about and alternative for a ten year old [emoji640]Runner?
A nine year old Runner?
Mine just turned fourteen. Really nice not having a payment though.

IMO, the reason you get a NEW car is because it has features not available on the previous year, or because you have the money to buy a luxury car and want those leather seats smooth and uncreased. But, we are talking about a 4runner... something that is not meant for luxury, its it meant for pure utility, and from what i can tell the newest generation doesnt do much that the 5th gen didnt. Its still a utilitarian interior, and its still meant to get you where you want to go, holding everything you want it to, everytime. Nothing more, nothing less. Thats perfect for an engineer like me who is REALLY big on function (form is just a tiebreaker).
But, if that is the case, there is absolutely no reason to pay a premium to buy a new 4runner when i can just buy a 5 yr old 4runner with 40k on it for $30k. It does the exact same thing as the new one (same MPG, same offroad capability, same reliability, same road driving manners) and when everyone is keeping the car for 10 years and 150k miles or more... you are going to be driving an old 4runner at the end anyways so who really cares. I would gladly save the $30k difference in pricetags and use that $30k for damn near anything else.
People have been begging for a diesel 4runner and an Hybrid 4runner for years. Well they made the hybrid finally, and it only gets 23mpg. WTF? why would you even bother.
If you have a line on 2020 4Runners with 40k miles for $30k you should quit your day job, import them all to Denver and retire.
I think it is the opposite logic. 'Yota hold their value so well you may as well by new. I do the 4Runners are good offroad in their class but other than that very 'meh. I think the reliability is about the same as everything else. And when I say good, I mean the harder end of FS roads. Most FS roads in Co are fine in most any SUV or pickup.
I don’t disagree with your premise in the post, but fwiw, the hwy rating went from lucky-to-get Nineteen to a hopeful twenty six. For a heavy, blocky off road grocery getter that’s a pretty solid improvementOriginally Posted by californiagrown;[emoji[emoji6[emoji640
IDK, lots of similar deals to this: 2019, ~50k miles, for $32k.

I fully agree that less than 1% of 4runners see any road that i couldnt drive a beater camry on.
If i am going to own a car for 15 years, why wouldnt i let someone else take the depreciation hit if i am going to be driving an "old car" for 10+years of the cars life anyways? Nothing about a new 4runner is better than a 4 year old used 4runner, IMO.
And i am obviously biased here. I bought a 2004 SR5 in 2011 with 60k on it for $16,000. Still driving it with 230k on it, and no real plans to upgrade anytime soon. Desperately in need of a new car to replace my wifes 2013 Ford Escape though. What a POS.
Got it, so older, higher miles and more expensive for a Pittsburg, PA vehicle. My maths would come out different. I'd buy the new one for $50k and sell it when it's worth +/- $30k instead. But I'd rather buy a 2yr old domestic and sell it when it's got about 100k.
But there is no right answer, just choices.
Thanks a lot Kwai Chang

When I decided to upgrade from Gen1 in 2019 all the Gen2 with 50-100k miles I was looking at were priced just $3-4k cheaper than a brand new Gen3. Used Gen3 were pretty much on par. Even if you can negotiate seller down a bit it seemed worth it to just pay a bit extra for new.

I have a 2018 TRD off road premium with KDSS that I bought new for $37k. MSRP was maybe something like $44k.
The same trim level for a 2025 is $70k MSRP.
Toyota got rid of all of the reasons that I bought my 4Runner. The new generation engines and transmissions have terrible reliability issues.
I can’t imagine ever selling mine.
when I bought a new somewhat stripped 2010 ranger for 19250can$ I thot it was an awesume bargain except for the humanity of having to roll up my own windows but it might have been the cheapest 4x4 available at the time
then i got a new 2019 4x4 SR5 4 door Tacoma for < 42K and it was ok but I wasn't that excited, i was just not as impressed with a new Tacoma as i was with a new Ranger, Tacoma was good but it wasn't > 20K gooder.
I didnt like the trans dropping 2 gears/ engine screaming at 100kph, I wasn't impressed with how it carved turns and 1 other thing I forget but zero mechanical problems and so I have no Tacoma regrets
So I did a more extensive test drive on the Tundra to the point sales bro called and asked if I was ok, so based on that drive I order the a doublecab/ TRD in white and it took almost 3 months for them Texans to make it down thar in San Antone BUT I would say the wait was worth it
New Tundra was < 61K but I really like maybe almost love the Tundra, its got assloads of power it just lopes along at < 2000 rpm
I got a biking buddy who is a former ranger owner, I think he had a tacoms bough last years Tundra and agrees on the whole thing

Sold my Tacoma and bought an older Sequoia and a Tundra for $13k less than the newer Taco. Taco was nice, but just too small all around and not enough power. I'd probably feel the same about a 4runner. Only reason I bought the 2001 Sequoia was it was just too good of a deal to pass up. But I love the damn thing. Such a nice ride. Still gets 17.6mpg which isn't terrible. Nice having 2 V8's in the family to haul stuff around. Tundra is just for the camper. Wife drives a Hybrid Rav to offset our carbon footprint![]()
Sequoias are so nice to drive. Shitty mpg but nothing is perfect

New passport looks pretty nice. Seats fold flat it seems. Wife has a passport now and it’s a great vehicle. Looks like a good [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]]]Runner alternative if not into rock crawling
