I know it’s in here somewhere. Seems to vary with fritchi. Thinking about getting a pair. What brake should I get for a 115 waisted ski? 110? Some reports of an extra 5-8mm space available

That's what I used on 116 skis, just had to round off the inside point of the plastic on the end of the arms a bit so they didn't hit the topsheets when extending.

Thanks. I have no problem doing that. Just looked and looks like they just have 120 in stock. Is that going to cause a problem, stick out too far?

120's are pretty wide, I haven't done it yet but think I can even fit the 110 width on Lotus 120's with heavier grinding on the inside of the plastic tips. Tecton/Vipec brakes spring really wide when fully extended, you just have to do a little fitting to get them to clear the topsheets mid-extension.

I'd save the 120's for fatter skis.

---------------- (tip to tip) ------------Topsheet -------- Deployed

    90 ------------- 135 ------------------- 91 ------------------ 110
    100 ------------ 152 ----------------- 102 ----------------- 122
    110 ------------- 157 ----------------- 108 ----------------- 130
    120 ------------ 170 ----------------- 130 ----------------- 147

    Some details:
    • There seems to have been some brakes labeled "115mm" in 2017 that were actually 110mm brake arms.

    • Any of the brake arms can fit skis about 8mm wider than the "Tips at Topsheet" measurement if you grind off the inner points of the plastic brake arm ends a bit. (With the brakes mounted, move the brakes from stowed to deployed to see where they need to be ground to clear the topsheets.) If you do a heavier grind, you could go an additional 10mm or so. So with a moderate inner tip grind, "90" brakes could probably fit 101mm width ski, "100" brakes could fit a 112mm ski, "110" brakes could fit a 118mm ski, and "130" brakes could fit a 140mm ski. This is without even bending the brake arms.

    • Interestingly, the "115" (110) and 120 brake arms are the same from the middle to the first bend, and a more shallow bend angle (followed by a tighter outer bend) is what makes the 120 wider. Adjusting the ~45 degree bend angles in a vise should be a lot easier than modifying alpine brakes with 90 degree bends, since you can play with minor changes to the two existing bends instead of completely relocating full 90 degree bends.

K thanks again ,glad I asked. I’m going to have to track down some 110’s I guess. Crazy they change it between models let alone company to company. Apparently 1 doesn’t equal 1 .........sometimes

^ I have 116mm skis and tectons with 120 brakes being delivered today. I'll take a look and see if the overhang will truly be that big of a deal or not. Seems goofy.

I was going back and forth between “snowinn ” and “mec”. Snowinn has a “post shipping” option so leaning that way($150cheaper than mec and with post can possibly skip duty). Mec has 120 brake and snowinn has 110 available. I think I want brakes with these, not sure though . Do I? All my d fits are without brakes

What size do you need? I have some that fit a 110 ski.

They don't retract that far "in" like an alpine brake so you don't really want to run like a 120 on a 95 waisted ski on hardpack.
TLDR; Ski faster. Quit breathing. Don't crash.

What size are you looking for? I've got a brand new pair off my 100's I'm not going to use.

I could definitely use those and pass on my 110’s, if interested.

Grinch - sorry for confusion. I would probably keep my spare Tectons. ffmedic and jackattack i could use either 110 or 100mm brakes. I have no idea how much brakes cost so am open to hearing

Okay... the 120 brakes on some 115mm skis are goofy big. Looks like I need to get some 110 brakes for sure. Not that I didn’t believe you guys I had just already ordered them.

I'd install them and observe how they retract and deploy to confirm whether they're too big or not.

1000-oak's observations would point toward them being too big, but after all of the mislabeled brakes on the Vipecs, I've become a trust but verify sort of guy ;-)

    Fritschi Tecton

Someone buy fritchi a tape measure. That does look yuuuge. Maybe they measure at that first bend . That looks about 5 extra mm’s. Maybe you can tweak them a bit bit or like Thom says, they might be fine the way they are with the roll out. Almost looks like 2-3 mm per side in at the ends and it’d be good

    Fritschi Tecton

You can't judge how wide the brakes are/function by just holding them onto the ski like that. They need to be mounted to the binding and the ski to get a good idea of how they work when they deploy.

I had the 110 brakes on a 110 ski and in all actuality I think they'd barely clearly a 114 ski

Gotta mount them to check, the arms get pinched in quite a bit, especially at half-deployment.

Well shit this is confusing. Can someone with mounted skis in the 112 - 117 range chime in specifically?

Can confirm, I've got 110's on ZeroG 108's and they are just right. But I thought the exact same thing before I mounted them up.

So glad they finally got this shit sorted. Was confused when my 2nd gen Vipec 120 brakes barely cleared 115.
