Anyone else see the movie Spellbound? It's a documentary about the National Spelling Bee. Excellent, excellent movie. Another one that's also good is Word Wars about Scrabble champions. Some of these guys make Trekkies seem almost normal.
I watched it the other day and wasn't overly impressed. Seemed to me that most of the parents put their kids under tremendous pressure to win these things, and that the kids are going to go grow up warped because of it. Especially the one that was in here final year and didn't go through to the last round - can you imagine having something your parents have built you up for that much being unattainable for you, ever? Harsh.

Do you realize that you've just posted an admission of ignorance so breathtaking that it disqualifies you from commenting on any political or economic threads from here on out?

Yeah, some of the parents push too hard, but failure is an experience everyone has to go through.

I thought it was interesting seeing the differences in the kids they followed. Some were totally groomed for this, others grew up in households where English wasn't even spoken. It made for a very interesting documentary, IMO.

Harsh? Well, look at Benny's sad life after all these years. If not at my dismal and meaningless job, I spend most of my time alone in a small, dark apartment, drinking heavily, my only companion the soft, blue light of the television set, lamenting lost loves and failed dreams.
