    Snownado/Arctic Deep Freeze 2016 Check-In

    Who's got what?

Last Thurs - Friday we got about 7 inches in the lower basin then yesterday we had a nice Chinook wind roll through and I *thought* there was going to a a melt off as temps reached up 41 but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Woke up this morning to 3 more inches and steady snow fall. Chores are going to suck this morning - trying to delay going to the barn but I can only wait so long - animals need their breakfast!

Later this week, after more snow, we are supposed to drop into the single digits. Oh joy!

Awesome weather this weekend... About 25 and snowing at our place. Have probably ended up with about a foot over the last several days. Not huge, but nice. Warm though... We had 60+mph wind last night and the snow didn't move at all. And it looks like nws is backing off the forecast for this week.

Nice to see the Basin finally catch a gear. I haven't even loaded my locker yet and I'm sure as hell not going to do it over winter break.. It'll probably be the middle of January before I go up there. Good thing global warming is only a myth... Otherwise, I might be getting a little nervous!

It's possible to ski but it's fucking cold with a wind chill and there isn't much snow yet so no rush to go skiing

It's been the best opening month in at least 5 years. A week ago Sunday was all time fantastic skiing.

Yes, it's been cold in the lowlands and yes, there's been a lot of snow on the roads with the usual Puget Sound snowy road incompetency. Last week a normal 1:45 drive was 3+ hours one night (last Friday) and 2:45 last night, Sunday.

Feeding hasn't been that bad, gloves and hat required but it's just as gooey ad slippery as usual. The grass was really good late this year, so feeding at least started late.

We've blown through a ton of wood already. Down to about 2 cords so we're getting another, actually paying for it rather that harvesting stormfall.

Forecast is for a few days of cold, drier weather, then back to snow by the 20th. w00000t!

How's Bluewood doing? Are they running yet?

Bluewood had it's earliest opening in 5 years! Woot! Great conditions right now - light & dry. Lots of pow-pow!

This is what feeding at my place looked like this morning:

    Yours looks colder.
There's not as much snow on Novelty Hill but it's wetter. Tires as feed bins - good idea, we have plush plywood boxes.

Actually not bad this morning - low 30s which is not as cold here as it is there due to the dry conditions.

Tires work well in the wind - keeps the hay in one place. They have shelters too when I put hay plus I bring them into the barn at night. I took this pic on Saturday - beautiful blue bird day!

No bars for the horses here, a little shelter shed, but that's it. It doesn't get as cold here in PS as it does in the Palouse.

KQ, if I told you how nice the weather was yesterday, you would likely punch me I always tell people that the weather in Coronado during November and even into December can just be fantastic. The older I get, the more I am re-accessing my desire to live were it is to damn cold (below 40 degrees) for extended periods of time. Guess I am getting old and weak, errr and winter surfing is really fun in So Cal.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Ya know... I don't mind the cold and while the snow makes chores take longer as long as it's dry I can deal. Ice I can do without. That said, I would not enjoy a green, warm Christmas but I'm sure there will be time when I'm too old for all of this nonsense.

Forecast calling for another 5 - 8 inches by Wednesday when temps will plummet into to the single digits.

Strictly speaking it's my 85+ y.o. inlaws who live 5 minutes away.

They still have the old family homestead on Novelty Hill compleeeet with the 1902 farmhouse and a barn from 189? on 43 acres.

They rent horse pasture. No horse stalls, no froofy equine amenities, just pasture, so sheds. And winter feeding, which the girl and I do when her parents get too tired or injured. Also chase the cows when they get out through the neigh - boring suburbs and cul de sacs.

They're the least expensive in the area and their clientele are not usually the jodhpurs sporting sort. Two of the pasture renters are horse rescuers who go to the horsemeat/glue sales and try to pick out rehabilitatable horses. They bring them back to the inlaws farm, get them healthy and place them. My daughter does a lot of work there and has since she was 4, so one of the rescuers sold us a horse for $5 . She rides it like a little Mongolian Warlord and has gotten good enough at the dressage deal that now some owners at local horse barns are going to pay her to ride their horses in shows.

    But I'm not cool.

LOL!! bet he skis there all the time, right?

Currently Baker has a bigger base than any other area in the state but I'm sure to a regular who is used to skiing an area that enjoys the unofficially highest average annual snowfall of any resort in the world, 90" seems like "no base".

That's all good and your daughter sounds like a badass!

Keep her sponsored and leasing horses until she figures out her discipline (give her a taste of Pony club or eventing if you can) or you'll end up spending her college fund on animals, vet bills and the Dover and Bit of Britain catalogs.
