I have a 2001 XJ AT I didn't mention cause he said manual. But the thing AT gets you in this model is full time 4hi. Afaik the manual only has part time 4hi (both with 4low) Might not matter to him cause he's saying not much pavement but thought I'd throw it out there. He also said heat, and they are kinda known for getting clogged heatercores, and mine is. Defrosts the windshield, but it's not an oven in there. It's only a $50 part but have to take the dash out so I'm not in a hurry. I've relegated it to grocery getter status not in a hurry to sell but if someone is dying for one let me know.

Also still open to sell this, same story, no need to sell but would at that price, maybe a few hundred less.

Nice looking jeeps... Thanks for the heads up. Personally, I won't buy any more jeeps. I know there are folks out there who swear by them and never seem to have an issue, but I've spent my last day troubleshooting why my jeep won't crank, or the headlights won't turn on, or the interior lights won't turn off, or the fan won't come on, or the battery is draining, or, or, or... But all that notwithstanding, I appreciate the thought.

So I'm a fan of the XJ and the CJ/YJ too. That said, I've noticed a lot less value in XJs recently (CJ/YJ perpetually overpriced). For a while, they were selling for dirt cheap. At that time, I might have encouraged you to ignore your gut on the reliability issues. However, it seems to me like people have bought up much of the remaining un-fucked-with xjs and fucked with them, or at least asking exactly what they paid 5 years and 59K miles ago.

I want a 1972 or earlier CJ5 or CJ6. If I could find a 69 or earlier with the 225 V6 that would be my first choice. Pop in a Muncie 4spd, Warn overdrive, NP transfer case and Dana 44's with Warn manual locking hubs and you've got a bombproof go anywhere rig. Can't afford one right now but when I can I'm gonna find one.

That's a vw, not an XJ btw. XJ looks a bunch easier. I helped a friend replace his core on an early 00's golf, and I would as soon move to california to not use the heater as do that job again. There is a reason it's usually pushing 1k+ in labor to replace those damn things.

Plus its only the questionable chinese cores that cost 50 bucks, and when you put that much labor into the truck i'd as soon buy OEM or equivalent, and replace the AC evaporator and the blower motor. Then you still have to get the AC recharged.

I still have dash parts from that damn vw in my garage.

What don't you like about that motor? It's basically a good old Chevy small block V8 minus 2 cyclinders. Simple, simple, simple. Plenty of aftermarket support for them over the years from great intake manifolds and even fuel injection if that's your thing. I had one that turned 215 horses at the wheels after a bit of work in my '60 Willys CJ5. That thing would just about do wheelies and could chirp 'em right into 3rd and got 22mpg on the open road if I kept it under 55. The only other option for me would be an Olds/Buick/Rover 215 cid aluminum V8 and that mostly because of how incredibly lightweight they were.

Some sort of Japanese fetish in here.... not that I've got one.... Samis are crazy cool. Toyota's are rad, especially pre-86. 22r's are easy to work on. Which you will do, older just means more stuff is broken more often. And they fall apart around the drive train just as much as the domestic trucks. Toyota's have been rusting in half way before the Tacoma showed up. Flinstone floorboards in the cabs after the gas peddle falls off, etc... 79/80 is a pretty sweet spot for trucks (even domestics), pre-VIN, pre-catalytic converter, vacuum lines and egr blocked off... Finding stuff in good shape is getting harder though, and not just because guys cut them up for crawling, but because of they are literally old trucks that are falling apart and rusting away. 30+ year old wiring shorting out randomly under the dash. The old pre-85 domed 20/22r heads are hard to find, just remans from junkyard picks, no new castings as far as I know. Other small Toyota parts just aren't available any more. You'll probably be making your own rear parking brake cable and other shit like that. And you definitely won't be doing the Marty McFly burnout, but you will get up to the lake for the weekend.

Kinda surprised old Wranglers and CJs haven't been mentioned much in the last 5 pages. They're got to be at least one for every kind of Japanese rig on the road, plus another two more sitting in a junkyard somewhere. Not to mention catalogue part support blows the old Toyota/Samurai stuff out of the water. I like my truck, but a Jeep would just be so easy.

Rangers too. What was it, like a 20 year run where they just changed the grill a bunch, maybe slapped a Mazda badge on it? Toyota tax free...

This is just silly- get a Jeep without a computer in it, and you will be able to fix it yourself. The carb might give you some fits at elevation, but otherwise, it is all pretty easy to fix. I get not wanting to become a mechanic, but if you run trails long enough, you are going to have to know how to fix stuff. If it leaks, it still has fluid. Leak stops, fill it. Headlights don't work, won't crank, battery is dead or fuel pump is out. Easy stuff.
If you think the Sami won't have these issues, I would bet against you.

I had a comanche with the i6/5s... It was good once I got it started, but god forbid it was raining I had someplace to be. Seems to me that jeep had perfected the weird electrical system long before ECUs were a common thing. I'm not expecting a <$5k, 30yo truck to be maintenance free. But I'm certain I'm not buying another jeep, regardless. You'll be glad to know that the unmolested cj5 that I would have found in some old lady's garage selling for $1500 will still be waiting for you when you get there.

If there were a 4x4 one of those for $5k, I couldn't possibly say no. I did see a pretty trick looking one on ebay with an opening bid of $19k. I'm finding that pretty easy to say no to.

I learned to drive on a trooper, manual trannie, including driving on the mnts and snow. It's one of the vehicles my parents regret selling, 20+ years later. They had the two door and then the 4 door.

I had a Baja Bug for a while. Fun and a nightmare, all at the same time. That was one jacked up ride. Fun on the dirt roads of the NEK when it was running though.

That was my first car. Loved my 61 Baja Bug with a 1600cc engine in it and the loader than fuck stinger exhaust. No heater, totally inadequate brakes, but man it was fun to get silly in.
I was so shocked my wife would ride in it. I knew she was a keeper if that POS didn't scare her off.
