Lost power in a straghliner that took out most of the city. 100K+ out yesterday, 50K still out now. Got a 60 watt solar panel out back recharging the power bank for that. Ran our internet gateway and a couple other devices for 5 hours last night. Small generator running 3 full size fridge/freezers and the work office stuff today. There was no warning for this event. Missed the house thankfully but others weren't so lucky.. News choppers circling the neighborhood right now..

Topic?? Shameless solar panel plug. But the main juice supply is coming from the 5K propane genny.

The people of an very poor country who historically haven’t been large contributors of carbon emissions vote to keep the oil in the ground. Bravo! Yet people in this country are freaking out that the cost of gas is higher albeit lower than average prices in Europe have been this millennium. And we’re the country that has put more carbon emissions into the atmosphere than any other country. One of our 2 political parties is the only major party in the developed world that denies that climate change even exists. Oh and Ecuador is suffering massive gang violence from all the assholes in this country that need to snort cocaine to have a good time. We are the problem!

True, true and true. It’s particularly sad how much the US coke habit has destroyed whole countries - Ecuador maybe the latest on that list. But huge kudos to them for voting to protect their rainforest from big oil! Spent a few months there in the 90s - amazing country with incredible diversity.

On a two hour boat trip down the Napo River from Coca, through otherwise intact rainforest with a few indigenous villages we saw a half dozen oil company sites. This was about 5 years ago.

There’s been oil extraction in Ecuador for quite a while. They successfully sued Shell years ago. But this is the first time that extraction has been put to the voters and they voted to keep it in the ground with a over 60% majority. The Ecuadorian government relies heavily on oil money. And it’s a dirt poor country. You think there’s any chance that over 60% of Americans would vote to end oil extraction in ANWAR? And we’re the wealthiest country in the history of humanity.

twas Texaco, now owned by Chevron – which admitted to the environmental damage it (Tex) caused mid-late 20th century was later found guilty in Ecuador's high court and fined $10 bil back in 2018. However, immediately after judgement Chev was cleared of responsibility by the international tribunal of The Hague. So that means charges of billions of dollars for indemnity that could have set a precedent in holding big oil accountable was lost and sends a strong signal to the rest of the industry, e.g., Royal Dutch Shell currently giving zero-fucks as it destroys Nigeria with impunity.
    style matters...

One wonders what goes through the minds of the execs of these companies when they rape the planet. Surely at least some of them have children, grandchildren, maybe great grandchildren. How do you go about making the world unlivable for your descendants? What rationalizations could cover that?
Probably the same one I use--what difference would it make if I stop doing it if everybody else keeps on.

Anybody read “Parables of the Sower?” I could not finish it. Over a year later and it still sometimes keeps me up late.

PS. No idea or opinion of the web host. It’s just what popped up after searching.

I'm sure many of them view this as a zero-sum game, where there are going to be obvious winners and losers, and their objective is to hoard enough wealth at the expense of other so that their descendants are the winners.

They fail to recognize that wealth won’t mean shit to their descendants on the type of planet that we’re headed towards at this rate.

For some people there is simply never enough. Never enough money. Never enough power.

Imagine owning yachts you never use, houses you never visit, planes you rarely fly. The consumption required to maintain these things is insane.

There's a place in-between being part of the planet and raping the planet where the rest of us should find happiness, but the push for consumerism at the highest level will never allow people to settle into that place. How many TV's dies a family need? How many vehicles? How many ski's, bikes, etc...?

It took me until my mid 40's to find peace in downsizing. It's a work in progress.

Wildfires ravaging Louisiana coast. Massive heat dome over the south and then a tropical storm/hurricane poised to strike the Tampa area late this week. We are fucked, well actually they are fucked.

    But this is normal
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Will be interesting to see what happens when this hurricane hits record warm temperature water in the east GOM.

Apparently, Arizonan Republican politicians are gaslighting people over the weather with such excellent quotes as "I don’t recall feeling that this July was particularly hotter " and "this weather is normal."

Well at least they are taking "action".
“We pray, Father, for solutions to end suffering and for our temperatures to trend downwards to provide relief for so many in harm’s way,” the legislative chaplain said as sweaty heads bowed in the state Senate.

Yeah... when people say they're praying for a solution, I don't expect them to be literally only praying for a solution.
