Honestly couldn't blame them as I disturbed their house.
Same thing happened to me last season digging a particularly shitty traverse across steep sandy ground. I was wailing away at some rocks, got stung on the ear and on the arm pretty much at the same time, heard the buzz and realized what was up when I saw the exposed nest under a rock I had just flipped. I took off running down the fall line and promptly ate shit in a bunch of bushes, collecting 3 more stings in the process. I gave the area a wide berth for the rest of the afternoon and worked on another portion of trail but had to ride through on my way home. Unfortunately the section the hornets chased me away from way off camber and sandy so I ate shit when trying to ride it fast, getting stung on the hand as a reward. Made braking super painful for the rest of the ride.
I came back and sprayed the fuckers later in the week so I could finish. Ran into 2 above ground nests lower down during that build, each resulting in 1 sting and a frantic run into the bushes. Good times.
