Tried to get some replacements for janky old rubber & plastic parts as I clean up the old DH bike. $34 for fork bumpers, chainstay protector and pulley wheel hood thing. Seemed pretty cheap until I found out they also want $25 shipping.
Fuck off. This stuff probably weighs 30 grams total and would fit it a Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope.
However many are in a shit ton.

eBay sellers selling take offs as “brand new”

Come on man, at least say “new unridden take off from a new bike” or something. Especially on shifters or brakes where the cable may have been cut for a smaller bike.

Seller’s response: “just go to a bike shop and buy a new cable for $2”

That’s not the point dude. I probably would have still bought it if I had known, but I’d have been prepared with a new cable (and I bet the LBS charges more than $2 for an xtr coated cable).

Not sure I understand this rant.
Just because a part was on a bike that was never ridden, how does that make the part not new? Were you hoping to get the original box?
Example: I currently have an Evil Offering for sale. It has a completely new, never ridden drivetrain that I took off my new Switchblade. How is the XT derailleur and shifter any less new than one purchased and installed?
    Or the 36 X2,
Or the stem, bars, chain, whatever? Hell, even the cables you mentioned, obviously, provided they fit correctly...
Like I said, I really do not get what you are upset about.

He's complaining because some brand new takeoff parts not declared as such can present fitment issues. Derailleur / dropper cables, chains, forks (steerer tube), etc. All those are different than brand new, never installed OEM parts.

That blows. Bad enough if you were at home base but on a road trip is insult to injury. Vibes. Change the mission to hookers and blow

I just had a bike pack a Silky some tools and a pack with yoga stuff and the magwheel lock key taken which isnt much but its > 400$

I had no way to get the wheels off in case of a flat so I had to get my tire guy to extract the locks, he said in the past the police dropped off a bag full of stolen wheel lock keys so the bad guys just steal every thing like what thief would bother to bike stuff, yoga mats & blocks & mag wheels ?

edit: I keep relaizing something else got taken which reminds me I forgot the tire pump !

What Andeh said. A new derailleur comes with a new cable that fits my XL bike. A takeoff from a smaller bike comes with a cut cable that does not fit. Also in this case they ripped the ferrule off to get it off the bike so the end is frayed (not visible in photos) and you'd have to cut it even further shorter to get it back through the housing.

If your fork steerer has been cut, you disclose it because it won't fit every bike even if the fork has never even had a wheel mounted. Sure the cable is replaceable, and I don't actually need an XTR/DuraAce polymer coated cable...but that's a $25 part that is included with a new shifter and needs to be replaced on a take off.

Also lets just be clear...the word "new" has a meaning. Take offs are great, but they aren't literally new. They've been installed, they've been tested, and in 99% of cases I bet they've actually been ridden (if only around the block to see how the bike feels). Just put the damn words "take off" in the description so everyone knows what is up.

That sucks Rideit, I hope there's a special place in hell for bike/ski thieves!

It's too damn hot and humid to ride today. Real feel 104* today and it's definitely not a dry heat!!

That sucks RideIt. I can only imagine the sick feeling in your stomach when you saw your truck. I hope your insurance is able to help defray some of that, although your vacation is pretty hosed now I'd guess.

OK, I was really thinking about my own situation, which is a complete bike built with take-off parts. In my case, yes, everything is brand new, as in, like a new build on the bike. Steerer, cables, brake hoses, everything correct for the bike.
Calling it a brand new build is appropriate here.
These things should definitely be explained if selling the parts by themselves.
I declare this to be a fitting rant.

Good morning, fellas. So, e-bikers, CHECK YOUR POLICIES.
Turns out that USAA does not cover e-bikes of ANY type, regardless of class, category, configuration, registered or not.
    Period.
This was certainly never conveyed to us, in any sort of communication, in 23 years.
Fuckers probably have saved millions in payouts with this trick.

Thanks for the reminder that I’ve got to spend some time finding a USAA alternative. Last interactions with them have been awful and took getting the state regulators involved to get what we were owed.

Thanks for the heads up. I just emailed my Farmers agent to check. I've asked before and confirmed that my policies covered my MTBs, but that was before I owned an ebike and even if I did at the time, I don't think I would have made that distinction.

Exactly. We have had this policy since 2001, I don’t ever recall receiving an update outlining this policy, or we would have gotten a rider. It just seems very bait and switch. What’s next? They just arbitrarily say they don’t cover theft in a national forest, or a bike that has been raced?

Looks like they WILL cover an e-bike but it is an separate policy? https://www.usaa.com/insurance/vehic...kredirect=true
Sucks that they won't cover your current loss...

I believe "standard" homeowners policies down here in Freedumb Land cover bicycles as personal property.
