My kids can go to parties or the local store without having to worry about some of the shit I did, but they also don’t have the exposure to varying cultures and people I did.
    It’s complicated.

I was finishing up a great ride this morning, when a bee flew into my helmet and stung me on the forehead.
It was kind of funny when it happened in the Tour, not so much today.

I got stung in the neck commuting home a few weeks ago. Definitely not funny.

I got stung a bunch of times recently by what I'm guessing were ground hornets. Never got a good look, they moved too fast. It wasn't a swarm after disturbing a nest. It was one rogue asshole that would fly past randomly and start buzzing around me aggressively, trying to land and sting. And would chase when I tried to take evasive action. Seemed these attacks would only happen when I was standing still momentarily. Each time I could go back to brushing for an hour before getting bombed again. The stings hurt like hell for 20 min or so then faded off, but the whole shoulder/back area was sure sore later. Most of the stings were on shoulders and upper back. Fortunately I was wearing a sun hoodie so they couldn't easily get at my head and neck.

^^^ Fucking motherfucker ground hornets can fuck right off.

I've run into them digging a couple times. Sprinted a few hundred feet and 10 of them were still hounding me.

    0/10. Would not visit again.

Yeah one on its own was bad enough. I would have packed it in until next winter had it been a whole swarm at once.

There's a section of trail on marshall mountain called 'bees nest." I wasn't there but a couple of friends of mine did not have a good time out there one day building the xc course.

Anyway, how about when maintenance snowballs into more than planned. "Quick lower service" turned into most of a fork overhaul. And air shaft seals weren't looking so hot but we didn't have any and it wasn't leaking before I took it apart so I guess I hope for the best and get it next time. At least it's clean and freshly lubed up. the damper I just bled this spring had air in it again too. Plus I had to replace a couple of the pivot bearings.

I got stung in the face last summer up at Snowmass. Hornet flew straight at me, got me right below my goggles on the cheek. Real swole.

Here in the Tetons we have had a huge influx of new folks from Salt Lake and Park City. I don't mind them riding our trails (but I do mind them skiing our powder), but if they are going to complain about the trails then I sure wish they'd get involved. Come work on a dig day, carry a saw and cut things out, donate to our hardworking local trails groups- just give back!

I named one of my trails "Hornets" Those guys hammered me on the build. I felt one, then another, sprinted for my bike, jumped on, and probably peddled the fastest I ever have and ever will. Got out to the road and had one half dead stuck between shorts/knee pads and 6 or 7 stings.
Honestly couldn't blame them as I disturbed their house. [emoji16]

Was helping run an Endurance and XC mtb race, we had to move it from May to Aug b/c of spring rains. August the bees are way more active than May. Endurance & Cat 3 racers were getting stung by a nest that was stirred up by that much traffic across the roots of a tree. Went out to try and use bee spray against them which was pretty ineffective, but pretty much entire field got stung for a lap while we re-routed the course mid-race for Endurance racers. After bee spray doing nothing, two of us would just advise/cheer the racers about bees coming up and then I'd shout at them to sprint through the section as fast as possible.

I didn't get stung as a I put on a rain jacket for protection, but on the walk back I stepped off trail to let some racers go right onto a ground hornets nest. Was just like the Tommy Boy "Your firearms are useless" scene except w/ real bees. Two of us each got stung ~10-15 times as we'd taken off any semblance of protection we brought initially. I tried to race later on, but my system was a mess and pulled the plug after a lap or two. Fortunately not allergic, but as toast said 0/10 would definitely not recommend!!

Same thing happened to me last season digging a particularly shitty traverse across steep sandy ground. I was wailing away at some rocks, got stung on the ear and on the arm pretty much at the same time, heard the buzz and realized what was up when I saw the exposed nest under a rock I had just flipped. I took off running down the fall line and promptly ate shit in a bunch of bushes, collecting 3 more stings in the process. I gave the area a wide berth for the rest of the afternoon and worked on another portion of trail but had to ride through on my way home. Unfortunately the section the hornets chased me away from way off camber and sandy so I ate shit when trying to ride it fast, getting stung on the hand as a reward. Made braking super painful for the rest of the ride.
I came back and sprayed the fuckers later in the week so I could finish. Ran into 2 above ground nests lower down during that build, each resulting in 1 sting and a frantic run into the bushes. Good times.

Seriously. Not just lots of great trails, but a pretty wide variety too.

You should see the complainers down here on the Front Range.

Build a new DH directional bike-only trail: people bitch
Get a section of local trail designated DH directional bike-only: people bitch
Do any maintenance at ALL on ANY trail: people bitch
Don't do maintenance on a trail: people bitch

It's almost like bitching is people's default.

The horse flies up here are hangry this season, it's unreal. I didn't realize until this week they are attracted to the color black, which explains the painful bites around my sock line and legs in general as most of my short/chamois/socks are black. Like mosquitos, only the females bite. But man do they chase, even on a bike.

Unlike a mosquito, I don't feel it when they start gnawing. I just happen to look down and wonder how long they've been chewing, usually by nighttime I see/feel the extent of the damage which resembles a burn mark or bad chafe. Repellants are not working.

we've had the wettest summer in memory here in NB and I have yet to see a hornet.
I usually have to take out one or 2 nests in my backyard each summer, but there have been none this year.

That's usually true. We've had what I believe is the wettest year on record, and I haven't yet seen a hornet. But once about 5-6 years ago we had a couple dry years in a row and it was nuts. You'd get out of your car at the trailhead and the entire forest was buzzing. Not "I can hear a nest somewhere"...literally the entire forest in every direction hummed ominously, and you could always see a few in your field of vision. You had to get up to about 7000 feet before they stopped.

Near my house I get paper wasps. But most of the time they try to build a nest inside my breaker box, which provides a built-in bug zapper and keeps the numbers down.

Yeah - we have a "live and let live" unwritten policy with the paper wasps... but every few years some fuckin' yellowjacket queen decides to build a nest on the property - at that point, IT'S ON!
