That was mayby the more sensible way to go, but it also probably didn't really matter in the days of IS frames and forks. And as we've found with PM and 220+ rotors, +20 adapters aren't that dialed with a non-radial brake mount standard.
Yeah, I don't remember who started it. But as best I can tell, shimano is the reason they're still a thing.

Hayes was the first to come through our shop with 203’s back in the day. Would make sense since 203 is imperial (8”).

Doesn’t make sense to keep going with it for this long though.

Hayes also did 6” rotors, but they’re no longer a thing.

Eh, Hayes, TRP, Galfer, and Magura still do 203s too. It's really just Sram and Hope pushing 200s, though Hope still offers 203s as well.

    Ugh, it is always something.

I finally upgraded to 1x12 and 4 pot brakes thanks to Eluder.
Get that all put together, go for a shakedown ride and another in a slightly muddy Telluride. A few days later get everything clean and the clearcoat, in like 4 or 5 spots on my frame plus on my handlebar is all popping. Plus, my dropper post seal is popping out and then the post decided to stop actuating at all on the next ride.

With the 2 kids it was like new bike day having all the new components on the bike.... Then, blech. Luckily the Rainer post is super easy to service by the looks of the video, I'll pull it all apart, reset the seal, clean and lube everything and see if it actuates. If not I'll buy a new post for the last few weeks of the season and get this one shipped in.

^^^ Not really much of a rant, all in all you seem pretty easy to make happy.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

I have a garage full of skis and a mountain bike that usually works… and a gravel bike for when it doesn’t…. So, yeah. My rants are weak like clock radio speakers

You can ride in anything you want if you can ride like that dude..

And there is a bit of a tall T effect here. Like, that's what is in for that freeride bro culture, and down the road from him it's skinny jeans (thinking Emil, et al.)....

I guess this isn't really a rant, but my Hei Hei was making some not-nice noises under hard loads. First thought was to pull the crank, check the BB and maybe just clean/re-tighten the direct mount chainring since I've had that be the culprit in the past. Was really bummed to discover this:

I'm not the original owner. Pretty sure the shop rat I bought it off a few years back rode the piss out of it, I tried to do the same. So maybe not the most shocking thing for an alloy frame with a flexstay design. Bounced some emails back and forth with Kona, sounds like they still have some rear triangles kicking around, not sure on pricing just yet...hopefully semi-reasonable as I love the fit and feel of this bike.

^ I broke a similar piece on my giant anthem last summer.

I thought I was all good because I actually had a new rear triangle on order already.
However I found out that that piece was not considered part of the triangle, but part of the frame. The shop talked about warranty stuff, but in the end I just wanted a bike that worked so I paid out of pocket for the part (I was prepping for a trip and the warranty process was going to take too long)

Dirt & weather's been so nice around here lately, so riding as much as possible, but every ride has been pretty painful w/ a bruised rib from surfing a few weeks back. All around riding isn't too bad, but jumps or big moves are pretty high on the pain scale. Getting old sucks, everything hurts more and takes forever to heal.

I am pretty sure 8" (203mm) rotors are a Hayes thing that refuses to die because of Shimano. Remember 185mm rotors? thankfully that is long gone.
a positive attitude will not solve all of your problems, but it may annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

My saddle bag velcro let go and it dropped between my frame and wheel. Before I could stop and pull it out, it burnt a hole though my bag, AND melted a hole in my $35 spare Tubolito. FAWK.
Going to try to patch it with the Tubolito patch kit today, but the hole is right on the overlap seam. We will see if it holds up.

Been nice 'round these parts as well. Hell, we've not even had a frost yet. Haul from yesterday:

    Same here in eastern Canada.

Unfortunately it's going to come to an end because we're supposed to get a bunch of rain that won't really dry up because it's dark, cold and the leaves are dead.

Mud season starts this weekend. Fortunately we'll be into freezing conditions in a few weeks.

I was just thinking how I've been reaching for my gravel bike more this fall. Something about long gravel rides amongst the foliage is more appealing that leaf covered, slippery mountain bike trails this fall.

Haven't seen real rain in about 5 months in BC. 21*C and still swimming in the lake, not complaining but, WTF, we need some rain.

Without fail, every time I swap tires or add sealant I somehow end up with a huge fucking mess. Am I the only one?

It's never the same thing either. Tonight the tire seated perfectly with my floor pump and I was on track for the cleanest tire swap ever. Add first syringe of 2oz sealant, perfect. Go to add another 2oz and the hose clogs as I'm pressing the plunger and bursts off the syringe. Sealant everywhere.

A local Trek store just finished remodeling, so I stopped in to check it out. One "salesman" asked if I was looking for a bike. I said: possibly; I've been looking for an XCM race bike...but I'm torn between the Super Cal...and just saving the $$$$ and getting a Pro cal...I guess I'd have to test to see how much different 60mm makes compared to ISOSpeed alone.

First, I'm told that it has 80mm. Fine, whatever. Then he asks me "to look at this." "This" is a FuelEX. A very nice bike to be sure...but no one would mistake it for a XC or even a "downcountry" bike. Then he shows me the TopFuel (which I sorta get), but I'll him: ideally, I'd like last year's TopFuel, but good luck finding one NOS...I think I'll stick with the Super or Pro.

He then pulls out a MED Pro cal. Standing at 6'4", I say: I don't think that will work...do you have an XL? He says: I don't think you need an XL, but I have "this." This time "this" is a Med/Lg Supercal. I tell him that I think it's a little chilly for a test ride and maybe I'll come back when it's nicer out.

Not being a drama queen and none of these by themselves is over the top (well...the FuelEX kinda is...but it's a nice bike), but taken all together: is it too much to ask that the guy trying to pitch a $4500-$7500 bike knows at least a little about the bike...and what the customer is asking for?

It was like trying to buy ski boots in Delaware...except we actually can ride bikes here!

I guess I'm lucky that you can't spit around here without running into a Trek store...and there's plenty of LBS around selling other brands (oddly, no real Speshy presence), but this was not a positive experience.
    Quoting myself bc:

I was driving past the local Giant store, so I popped in to ask about the new Propel. The conversation went as follows:

Sales lady: Can I help you?
Me: I was just gonna see about the new Propel.
    SL: What?
    Me: the 2023 Propel.
SL: Is that, like, a brand?
Me: The new Giant...2023 Propel...it's a road bike.
    SL: And it's a Giant?
Me: Thank you...I'm just gonna go look over here....
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Impressive. I make enough of a mess that I try to remember to put down a drop cloth but that is next level!
