That is why I do not fix my gf’s bike; I supervise and advise while she fixes.

My only guess is that it got picked up in the parking lot. Very strange.

    That's a delicate dance.

Just showed her the cable screw on the rear der. She sees it now. She was convinced it was a limit screw. The new cable slipped a bit preventing about 5 gears from being used. I swear very few "engineers" understand how to fix other people's work

Mountain bikers and hikers bitching about motorcycles on the trails built by/for motorcycles. Fucking idiots.

I concur. Popular around here for hikers to shit all over other user groups and I have yet to run a across a hiker out doing trail clearing or maintenance of any kind on a trail (unless you count some bullshit feel good Montana Wilderness Association weed pulling circle jerk). Maybe there is a hiker out there somewhere doing something to benefit others besides getting shit closed down, 🤷♂️.

So, if I am hiking with my saw in a backpack and my intent is to cut trees to improve my mountain biking experience, where do I fit in? Hiker? Biker on a mission?

Yeah, that one always bothers me. There's a ton of fun trail around me that would have been reclaimed by nature years ago if it wasn't for motos riding and clearing it.

Hah! I do the same often, but guess what, I rarely if ever run into anyone. So maybe the question is, if a tree falls in the woods and no one sees it getting cut out, but it’s been cut out, was it ever blocking the trail? FWIW- you’re a hiker if you are hiking with a scowl on your face and only yell at people, but not to say hello.

Yesterday I was clearing this overgrown unsanctioned trail with a hand saw, when this douche rolls up, makes some remark about “dumbing down the trail”, then takes off.

I was honestly too confused to even respond, since I was just cleaning up unrideable dead fall, and branches that wanted to stab you in the face while riding. Since when is making the trail less shitty dumbing it down?

^^He's an idiot. Maybe he saw that phrase on MTBR and desperately wanted to use it.

Broadly speaking, we have two kinds of hikers. There are the stereotypical busy-bodies that are very vocal and judgy, but spend way more of their time at public comment meetings than on the trail. They stick to the short loops, don't do any trail work, and are generally pretty useless. Then, there are the ones that are stoked to be in the woods and to see other people enjoying the trails, regardless of conveyance. A lot of them do trail work, mostly solo, often really early in the morning. Here, they're the folks that do the most weed eating and cutting back of overgrowth and downed trees. They're also very industrious, and have built a bunch of the better unsanctioned trails here. Some of these folks identify as mountain bikers (or trail runners), but they enjoy building and working on trail as much or more than they do using it, so I tend to lump them (and myself, lately) in.

Mountain bikers are pretty good trail stewards, though they mostly only work in groups on organized trail days. They'll occasionally clear blow-downs and such, but they like to sleep in and are generally pretty lazy, so they create ride-arounds because they're in a hurry to get back to the car in time to get the kids from soccer.

Trail runners don't do trail work, but they also don't complain or really care about anything.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

    Reactions to deadfall:

Hiker/Biker: "Godammit, I have to climb over this accursed thing."

    Runner: "Hey, a hurdle, weee!"

Reality: branches 8 feet off the ground have been cleared. Logs 6" off the ground are still there.

I'd add a 3rd category of hikers, or maybe they fall under the extremes of the first kind you described: angry militants who are pissed at everything but are particularly angry about bikers riding "their" trails. They're the assholes who go out of their way to drag logs, rocks, or whatever else they can get their hands on into the trail to "slow down" the bikers. Or will pile brush back onto unsanctioned trails when they find them. And will scream at you that "this ain't a bike trail" if they see you riding.

You should have asked him to ride it and show you how to get past it.

There was a shitty ride around through the brush, but who prefers that to riding the trail?

Brakes. both front and rear brakes stopped working last week. I tried swapping brake pads thinking i had somehow fouled them. Now im thinking its the rotors. They have less than 50% power right now- i cant skid on a gravel road. Id really prefer not having to keep buying stuff until i can figure out the cause. Was pretty unnerving riding a steep black trail this weekend knowing that grabbing a handful of brakes would only result in minor slowing. Did increase my commitment to steep chutes and corners though... so theres that.

The thing is sanctioned trails (dependent upon where of course) have a lot of rules. I know guys who build some and they don't necessarily like what they're building, but it's what has to be done. Their rogue trails are sick!

Aaaaand…the smoke just rolled into the valley. Just a haze now, but probably this will last until September or so.

We already cleared out from yesterday's smokescreen, perhaps you will too.
