Well, I'm not getting any commitments from my friends, so I could be flying solo. Does anyone have a bed/sofa for a paying customer? Or if you haven't booked a room yet, keep in mind that I'm looking and need a spot. I'm pretty flexible at this point on dates.

The chalet we're booking sleeps up to six so there's always a bed for you. The room rate is very reasonable - works out at about Euro 15 per night. I'll PM you with my mobile number so that you can get ahold of me but do bear in mind it'll likely be switched off while I'm skiing (interferes with the digital avy beacon).

Woohaa... the booking for new year was confirmed today.
And another 50-80cm on the way until thursday.
    See you there Roo.

footnote: If the friends of mine who wanted to join me do not confirm within the next 3-4 days i'll have 2 supercheap beds for sale in Villar d'Arene(3km from La grave and yes still on the right side of the Col du Lautaret). So if anyone wants to join spontaniously.... edit: new year. .....(70€ for the week if we are 4)

Should be good. I'll be down in Bourg d'Oisans during that period. Hope to introduce Mrs Roo to La Grave!

What web site are you getting your weather details from?

    Several....
Well first the meteofrance avalanche bulletin which is pretty reliable and then i countercheck several weather models at www.wetterzentrale.de /karten for the precip maps and 850 hpa temperature. (basically the temperature in 1500m, less in a storm more in a high pressure system)
snowforecast is nice for those colourful maps but it is only one direct model output and it is computing with a very large scale.
the bolam model is quite good(computing on a 6.5km scale). i check it every now and then at an italian site.

quite the satillite image. When those storms come from the south, as they almost always do early season, La Grave gets hammered with snow. Another great early season there.

OK, so I'm in - flights are booked.

Roo - keep it quiet, I haven't mentioned anything to Mrs. Monkey yet - I need to select the right moment (if only I can avoid screwing anything up for a couple of hours, maybe I can catch her in a good mood!)

Eggs-cellent. Email me instead. I have PM turned off. It doesn't work thru the firewall at work.

Sheeeeeat. The biggest storm brewing is swirling around this board. Talk about a bunch of crew hookin it up. The rest will follow, cause faith is its own reward.

Personal experience says be very careful. Now I don't know Mrs Roo too well and it could be that she'd whip Schmidt's butt up the Couloir Gravelotte and back down again but... my experiences with Mulletizer's bird (emphatically unlikely to be Mrs Mulletizer post taking her to La Grave) say that laydees and Valley X should only be mixed with extreme care.

A few points: La Grave is actually a lot colder than everywhere else (apparently) - it's just that men don't notice this small corner of Antartcia in France. There are no women there - this what really made me aware that women find security in numbers. No one talks about anything but skiing. Paradise? - I thought so, the lady did not. Occassionally peolple talk about footy; apparently that's worse than skiing...

And there's a lot more from where this came from. I'm not bitter. Much...

One last point: do not, under any circumstances, ever try to persuade the laydee to huck. It seems they don't like this. At all. There were tears. Sitting in the snow. I was worrying I was going to get a ski pole in the ribs. And, naturally, sex privileges were withdrawn until summer. I am young and untrained in the ways of the Jedi. All the same, consider yourself warned

    Hehe nice one mull.
But the key to success is having the right girl with you.
Mrs. plague (damn i dont wanna call her that until we are 35 got addicted to Powder last season she totally loves the fluffy stuff now. and she has been introduced to steeps (ok only up to 35°, but hey that is a start!) and she liked it.
She rips on the board and it was HER idea to go to La grave.(ok after she heard me talking feverishly about it for days...... ) She is not afraid of storms or cold weather and only wants to ride while on a skiing trip.(well at least at daytime.... hrr hrr)
seems like i hit the Jackpot

Sage words. I'm trying to acclimatise her gently. She's got the right gear and her technique is coming along fine but it's definitely going to be a case of easiest way down (Vallons) and a gentle pace. She's just started to land jumps after years of psychologically giving up in the air and landing on anything but her skis. I'm certainly in the same boat withthe bigger airs though. Attempting to coax her off a big huck might well result in tears. She has skied some steep stuff in Alpe d'Huez but we'll be there for an acclimatisation day first so that she can get used to her new Nordica W105s. Lets pray for snow.

We're staying down in Bourg d'Oisans so it won't be too intimidating for her because she'll be next door to her favourite ski resort in Europe.

But she did kick my ass at Fantasy Football last season.

    Fantasy football

I thought my g/f was just the right type for La Grave. She's skied all her life, used to be a professional instructor (and she claimed then that she like being out in all weathers...) and generally loves skiing. There are a couple of things I maybe did wrong: I made her wear her helmet (this made her think it must be scary/dangerous) and I got her to come for seven weeks last season (maybe this was a tad too much for a first time).

I might also have been a little sarcastic at the wrong moments. She really didn't like hearing that she didn't need to be scared of the trees because the trees wouldn't move and hit her, she just needed to ski around them...

Mrs Hayduke is going to Les Arcs the week before. Then she's going home.I really don't think she'd appreciate La Grave just yet.

ok, ok, this is starting to entice me. i have my reservations about getting the Miss to buy into it. sounds like she's on a similar level to mrs. roo. she athletic, and getting a lot better, but la grave might be a tad big to...ahem....swallow. she likes to ski a lot of different slopes/runs, and there won't be that many different things for her to do there.

i was already planning a long alagna weekend about the same time, dunno.

and oh, splat, you'll be plenty happy with alagna alone. i was blown away when i went last year. only think to keep an eye out for is high winds which they get time to time and fuck up the off-piste.

Ulty - the more the merrier. I'm bringing Mrs Roo for a day over Christmas and thus won't get to expose her to the carnage that will be EUROTHRASH!
