here's a nice story for your friday night

STAR VALLEY, WYO – It takes a village to save a herd.

They were on their way to work. They were just passing by. Probably they had better things to do or more urgent matters to attend to. But this is what we do in Wyoming. This is classic “Star Valley Pride.”

Kudos to those who cared, stopped, and got involved the other day when folks noticed a bunch of elk that had broken through the ice in the Pallisades Reservoir. They were drowning and certainly would have died when their strength gave out in the cold water.

But volunteers jumped in. Someone with a shovel, someone with a tamping/digger bar, someone with a rope. Before long, all 15 elk were saved.

for sure some will be hunted and others will die this winter but I just thought it's pleasant to hear about the stories of compassion for other beings to other beings
Or maybe that for me drowning sound like the worst way to go

either way carry on your usual debbie downing

Loon on Donner Lake this morning. Too far away for a decent pic. We see them some years, briefly. I used to see them a lot canoing in Ontario and Wisconsin, so they remind me of those times.

Thanks to the shortage of snow in SW CO so far this year we still have an abundance of deer hanging around when normally they'd be at lower elevations. I guess if you have the deer the deer eaters won't be far behind as we found out when one of our security cams caught this the other day. Look close, it goes by quick.

Driving home the other night, turned on to my cul-de-sac and saw a mountain lion hanging out in front of my neighbor's driveway. It glanced at me and trotted the other way, then turned down my driveway (!). By the time I got there and parked it was out of sight. Had the dog in the car, made a bunch of noise and got her into the house pronto.

A deer trail runs through my property and a deer was killed by a lion a couple of weeks ago at a nearby school so it's not too surprising. This is the first one I've seen in 20 years of living in mountain lion country though.

The tundra swans have arrived at Donner Lake. Very cool birds. No chance of getting a decent picture. They stay way out in the middle.

Here ya go Doc. I got close enough to one for a pic. Before they head to Kali they spend some time on the Great Salt Lake. They taste like roast beef. Num num num num.

^^ Nice. I've always wanted a chance to cook up a sandhill here in Colorado.

I hunted sandhills for only a couple years about 10 or 12 years ago. There was an early(Sept.) hunt in Teton Valley. Some people call them the Rib-eye of the sky. They were pretty good but not Rib-eye good.

I was out running my setter and new brittany pup yesterday after work and we found 6 woodcock and one grouse along the bare patches in the woods. The woodcock arrived in WI around March 24, but the foot of snow we got last week shut them down. Another round of heavy snow is forecasted this weekend so hopefully the woodcock are ready.
