Compared to what it costs to live in the Bay or LA, most gear is rounding error.

    Not hardly....

We've got a couple exceptions to the rule, but most of us are just as dirtbag as the average maggot.

BWA! I need to remember that the next time I'm in a shop. Wait...no I don't...I need help...GWA (Gear Whores Anonymous).

Actually, from what I've seen we're no better off than most of the others on this board. Spats does bring up a good point though. We may have a slightly higher disposable income. Salaries are generally higher in CA than most of the rest of the country since the cost of living is outrageous here.

I earn nothing. I live in a van down by the river.

But not that long ago I was making $48k out of school and got bumped up to $53k in my 2nd or 3rd year. I have a bunch of friends that I graduated with who were making $70-80k in their 3rd year out of school. I picked a shitty industry: defense. Tech pays pretty well. But then again, Bay Area rents and housing prices are insane. So they have to pay well. LA's not far off.

    sounds like boston.

my friends with marketable degrees were making about 50 k out of school. now more like 70-80 five years out.

i just pound nails, but that still pays between 45-60 k depending on your position.

As someone who grew up here, but only started working here last week, pay is higher, even adjusting for cost of living. It's easy to reach those salary numbers as an engineer, if you play the game right. And are willing to change jobs/move to get yourself up the pay ladder.

It's been so long I almost forgot what that word means. Looking for work has been interesting lately.

"So what have you been doing since Dec 2003?"

    "Skiing"

"Oh, were you a ski instructor or something?"

    "No I just skied."

Arnie vs. Arty? No chance. I'd get slaughtered. Although in the debates, I could probably out quote him. "Hey Arnie, let off some steam."

I'd stand a much better chance at the Presidency.

And yes Kush, it's true. My life of complete irresponsibility and total laziness is coming to an end. The good news is there's a potential position in Tahoe which may someday involve dropping a cash register onto a hippy's head.

This is quite possibly the dumbest thread in a long time, and that's an accomplishment.
