    MSP / L1P

Fraom the kids over at newschoolers:

PLease, watch the bonus feature in High Five, a phone msg from Steve Winter to Josh Berman:

Go to Support Page. Watch the Freeze Ad (or fastforward it). You will return to support page, click over a couple times till you pass the volkl logo and nothing should appear. Click enter, and never buy anything from MSP again.

Heyyy Josh, what’s up its Steve Winter calling. I think I sent you an e-mail but sometimes I feel as though emails come off as wrong, so I wanted to just talk to you in person about it. The main just of the e-mail is that we will prolly use less footage… way less footage, then we talked about, then we were planning on using with that ____ thousand dollar per second rate. I thought I would just let you know about that before we got too much deeper into editing. __________ segment we do have maybe 4 or 5 of your shots in there, and we were looking to use a couple of your still shots. But maybe, it would be a good idea to just take a step back and use a lot less footage, because the price is going to end up to be a lot. So, anyways that __________ thousand dollars was more of a guarantee, for if we were going to come down.
But what I think I want to talk to you about more, is the future and kind of where things are going. We should probably talk about humongous growth over here at MSP. Also you know, I’ve talked to Dynastar and tonnes of other sponsors who are bummed that some of their top athletes haven’t gotten into our films and they want to make it happen this year. And one thing they were saying, is maybe, they will give less support to smaller film companies and you know try and make it set for these guys to try and come out and shoot more and stuff like that. So I think its way more beneficial for us to work together, rather than NOT work together. I think the way things are going in the ski industry, the money is really tight and I think they are only going to put money into bigger projects. The more I talk to everybody in the industry the more all they care about is getting their athletes in OUR film and all the smaller stuff, sounds like they are going to cut everything.
So I really wanna talk to you about this, and I want to talk to you in person, because in the e-mails you can read into things a lot differently, you know the intonations and stuff. So gimme a call, I’m at 907-349-****. So I’ll go ahead and send this e-mail over. YEEEEEEEE DAWG LATES!

I'm claiming "ski film career peak" with my 1.4 seconds in Theory-3's "Breathe and Stop".

At least until Maggotwood 2 comes out.

I'll comment on this when I actually see the footage in question. Until then, it's just a post on the interweb. I will say this...I read some of that newschoolers thread just now. It's retarded beyond belief. Everyone over there is just assuming Steve Winter goaded the sponsors into this. Maybe Dynastar and the others actually had these thoughts on their own. We do know that sponsorship money has gotten tighter in the last couple of years. Wouldn't increased focus in the movie realm just be a natural progression of this. And if Steve really wanted to be a dick, wouldn't he just cut Josh out of the loop. Instead maybe he's calling to actually lend a hand and keep him in the business. I just always like to play the devil's advocate because I've found that way too many people jump to conclusions much too quickly. Dunno. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: Just so you guys know, all of MBS's post comes from that Newschooler's thread. He's not the one who said you should never buy from MSP again. Just want to make sure he doesn't get jumped on for that, since it's not really clear in his post.

i've read it twice trying to understand it, not sure i do.....does that message convey that Winter is trying to squeeze out the smaller filmmaker, the competition?
Or is he simply acting as the messenger after getting the word from the sponsors, the people with the actual money, that the sponsors want their athletes in the high profile movies?
Or, is Winter the one who planted the idea that if the sponsors want their skiers in his movies then they (sponsors) should pull support from MSP's competition, in this case the small filmmaker? By 'working together' does he simply mean he wants to absorb the smaller company, eliminate the competition?

I don't know, I don't read anything into that message that would lead me to never buy from MSP again. just my .02c.

The story to be told here isn't really something the general public necessarily needs to know, nor can it properly be told in a couple posts on the internet, especially since it goes way beyond L1P... What's the point of this post Gunder?

If MSP keeps making crappy movies it will keep me from buying anything from them again.

I dunno, I just found it interesting that a major company with a very large budget, thinks that they have to fuck with all of the little companies out there. I have no part in this shit, but I do think that it is fucked that somepeople feal htat they have to try to force the competition out when there own bussiness is hurting. There is better ways to conduct bussines than that. I posted this, because it seems to be hte new trend in the video industry and this has happend to more than one vid company, including a few friends.

It is in the DVD. You have to go through the steps at the beginning of the post on a regular DVD Player. It doesn't seem to work on a computer.

I love watching the MSP flicks, Yearbook was one of my favorites I've ever seen. But, when I hear shit like this, (and it's not the first time) it's retarted. It's something I do think people should know about......Yah, I love the movies they have put out, but will I ever buy anything from them again? Fuck no.

It's not so much that people shouldn't know about it, but it's such a big, in-depth story, that to blame MSP as a whole is kind of irresponsible. There are a ton of people involved with the company, and the actions of a very select few are giving them all a bad name, which sucks. But like Greydon pointed out, they obviously feel threatened by newer companies who are making inroads into their profit margins, and if they don't change, they're gonna experience the proverbial dinosaur death unless something gets changed... the ski industry still needs an enema, bad, but it's getting better on many fronts.

this isn't the first negative thing like this I've heard about MSP lately...actually come think think of it Steve Winter specifically.

It's skiing for crying out loud. Take the hard nosed business tactics somewhere else. I know there's more to this story, but I think the message is pretty clear...umm yeah, we're bigger and better than you and the sponsors really really really like us, so you shouldn't even try to compete with this little guy. those newschooler kids are really latching on to this, I wonder if it will make a difference.

Exactly! Just because 'it is skiing' doesn't mean these guys have any less of a right to make a living or god forbid even make a profit. I am sure it is a competitive business, there probably isn't a whole lot of money for ski films and they are working for every dollar.

Anyways, BB is right we don't know the whole story and we don't know both sides of the story.

For me, I will give my money to film companies based on the quality of product. I saw both of the films put out by these two companies and preferred Yearbook. I look forward to both of their next films. But honestly it is going to take more than the above message and some hearsay about what a tool Winter is for me to stop purchasing MSP films.

This really isn't anyone's business besides Winter and Berman. However, the fact that Berman is releasing his voice mails to the public is far, far worse than anything I've ever heard of Winter doing. Steve isn't the first one to try to get exclusivity from his athletes, and Level 1 isn't the first company to butt heads with him over it. Trying to ruin someone's reputation by releasing portions of private business correspondence to the public, however, is an absolute breach of ethics. Gundy, you would do well to protect your own reputation by not getting caught up in the L1/MSP pissing match.

Dood, all companies need to make money. If this means closing out market share held by smaller competitors they're going to do it. They have to.

True, maybe I shouldnt have repsoted that from newschoolers, but I figured some people here might find it interesting, and a friend that is involved with some video stuff asked me to post it over here.

Skiing should not have any poltics, but unfortuantly it does, it is too bad that when people start seeing $$$ signs it goes from being about hte fun and stoke to trying to make an even larger profit margin, I may not have the best bussiness since, but at least Im doing it becasue I have fun,m maybe that is what certian people in this industry have lost sight of.
