    pedal question: SPD compatibility

Kind of a jongish question, but I don't know the answer, so I'll ask...

I've got Time ATACs on my mountain bike and just got a road bike. Figured I'd just use the same shoes that I already have (Time ATAC cleats on them), and get another pair of pedals for the road bike. Time says that their pedals are SPD compatible...but the Time and Shimano cleats look a bit different.

Does that mean that Time cleats would work in non-Time pedals (i.e., any other pedal that is "SPD" compatible, shimano, wellgo, etc.), or do I have to get Time pedals to fit Time cleats?

    Thanks.

As far as I know, Time pedals are NOT SPD compatible. What they mean when they say that is that the cleats for those pedals can be mounted on SPD compatible shoes. I've never seen Time pedals that can fit SPD pedals or the other way around.

That's kind of what I thought...that it means they fit in SPD compatible shoes, but not in other pedals. If anyone sees this as wrong, please post, otherwise thanks!

You got it right Peter, the Time cleats are different and will not work with spd pedals. Get another pair of Time pedals and enjoy them too or save yourself a bill and just switch the pedals back and forth between bikes.

In my experience Time cleats won't work with SPD shoes(mountain), much less SPD pedals.

My girlfriend has 2 pairs of Time MTB pedals, and they fit standard mountain bike shoes with SPD slots just fine. The only time that their MTB pedals required special shoes was pre-1996 or so. After that they bowed to public demand and made their cleats fit SPD shoes. And I agree with just changing pedals back and forth between bikes. It saves a bunch of money and takes about 1 minute. You don't have to crank down your pedals unless you're hucking cliffs anyways.
